Dark Force Entertainment Readies Drive-In Double Feature #14 For Blu-ray Viewing Enjoyment On June 16

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

Dark Force Entertainment, with sales and distribution support provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has its next Blu-ray “Drive-In Double Feature” lined up for delivery to genre fans on June 16.

Titled Drive-In Double Feature #14, this exploitation combo kicks off the evening’s viewing with director Don Keeslar’s 1983 horror tale, Bog, starring Aldo Ray, Gloria DeHaven and Marshall Thompson … all box office names well past their prime.

The film was actually shot in Wisconsin (Harshaw) in 1979, but didn’t see regional theatrical distribution until 1983 … and, at that, the records are a little spotty on exactly where and when it was exhibited (only a limited number of 35mm prints were produced).

VHS followed (Prism).   There have been at least three DVD releases over the years (Trinity, Seedsman Group, Nostalgia Family), but the source material was always suspect.   If you got’em, toss them, Dark Force has a new 2K restoration from one of the surviving 35mm prints.

As to the story itself, chowderheads go fishing in the swamp using dynamite (Darwin Award-winners for sure) and in the process awaken a monster from a bygone age.   This creature kills and it is horny … and it is up to Sheriff Rydholm (Aldo Ray) to stop the terror.

After the intermission (yes, Drive-In Mode is included here as a viewing option), the second feature beings and it is writer/director William Grefé’s 1976 film, Mako: The Jaws of Death.

In Brian Albright’s “Regional Horror Films, 1958-1990,” he describes the prolific Grefé’s production as: “Although marketed as a Jaws knock-off, Mako is more in the vein of Willard and Grefe’s own Stanley, with Richard Jaeckel as a man with a mystical connection to sharks who kills anyone who threatens his aquatic friends.”   That pretty much nails it … all you need is Jaeckel to belt out “tear him up Mako” and you’re there!!

Mako: The Jaws of Death is also a new 2K film restoration from the original source material.
