Arrow Video, with domestic sales and distribution support provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has something special lined up for the Blu-ray marketplace on Apr. 23. This would be director Phil Karlson’s The Scarface Mob.
Back in 1959, producer Quinn Martin (Westinghouse Desilu Playhouse), had Karlson (Walking Tall, Ben, The Brother Rico, They Rode West, etc.) do a two-part pilot, complete with cliffhanger for a new proposed television series title The Untouchables, starring Robert Stack as the legendary FBI crime fighter, Eliot Ness.
For his efforts, Phil Karlson was nominated for an Emmy and won the DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Television.
The series was picked up and ran for four seasons — an additional 118 episodes, 120 if you count the Apr. 20 and Apr. 27, 1959 pilot airings.
In the tradition of the classic serials — Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers and more — the footage of the two-part pilot, as a result of the success of The Untouchables, was cut into a feature-length theatrical version and released to theatres on July 1, 1962 as The Scarface Mob. Neville Brand played Capone and Bruce Gordon was enforcer Frank Nitti.
Bonus nuggets include the newly prepared featurettes titled “Gang Busters” and “Philip Kemp on The Scarface Mob.” Plus there’s an extensive photo, post and lobby card collection provided by archivist Kelly Lunch.
