Last month we reported that Lionsgate Home Entertainment was adjusting to the new retail realities (bye bye Best Buy) with the rollout of an exclusive Blu-ray SteelBook promotion with mega-retailer Walmart on Apr. 2. These are Cutthroat Island, Rambo: Last Blood and the double-feature Red 2-Film Collection.
These titles haven’t even shipped yet and here’s Lionsgate with the next wave announcement. May 14 will see exclusive Blu-ray SteelBook selections for both director Tibor Takacs’ 1987 horror tale, The Gate, and filmmaker Ken Russell’s 1988 release of The Lair of the White Worm.
As to bonus goodies, The Gate features two archived commentary options … one team Takacs with writer Michael Nankin and F/X whiz Randall William Cook, while the second has Cook, make-up effects artist Craig Reardon, F/X artist Frank Carere and matte photographer Bill Taylor.
There are eight vintage featurettes included with this SteelBook edition of The Gate — “The Gate: Unlocked,” “Minion Maker,” “From Hell it Came,” “The Workman Speaks!,” “Made in Canada,” “From Hell: The Creatures & Demons of The Gate,” “The Gatekeepers” and “Making of The Gate.”
As for The Lair of the White Worm, the bonus features here include a pair of commentary options — the first featuring director Ken Russell and the second teams film historian Matthew Melia with Lisi Russell (aka: Elize Tribble).
Also included are video sessions with both editor Peter Davis and actor Sammi Davis (as Mary Trent), plus the featurette titled “Worm Food: The Effects of The Lair of the White Worm.”
