Lionsgate Home Entertainment has a pleasant surprise ready for film fans on May 7 with the news this past week that auteur filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola’s spectacular 1982 film failure, One from the Heart, will be getting a 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray release on that date.

The history of Coppola’s vision, which went wildly over budget, is well documented and so we won’t belabor that point here.   Rather, it is the final product that reached the screen that was remarkable … creative, visionary and very enjoyable as both a story and a cinematic event.

And yes, it was a colossal failure, bankrupting Coppola’s Zoetrope Studios, but nevertheless it remains a tribute to the vision of one hell of a filmmaker.  Las Vegas filmed on a soundstage … it was La La Land before La La Land — A fantasy, romantic, musical … and certainly more.

Now comes a restored (Coppola had problems financially finishing the film in a complete form) 4K presentation of One from the Heart with six minutes of newly recovered footage.

Bonus treats include commentary by Coppola and five new featurettes — “The Look of One from the Heart,” “The Cast of One from the Heart,” “The Choreography of One from the Heart,” “Reinventing the Musical: Baz Luhrmann One from the Heart” and “One from the Heart: Restoration Comparison.”

The companion Blu-ray disc features the original 1982 theatrical cut, deleted scenes, videotaped rehearsal footage and four vintage featurettes — “The Making of One from the Heart,” “The Dream Studio,” “The Electronic Cinema” and “Tom Waits and the Music from One from the Heart.”
