Not to knock Hallmark or Lifetime movies, but they have their specific audiences and most who are not fans of these films tend to give them a wide berth. Again, that’s not to put Hallmark or Lifetime productions down, they have their place.
So that gives you some reference to faith-based productions. The moment you say “faith-based,” you can almost hear the room begin to empty, except for the faithful … so crossing over to those heading for the exits is the challenge.
With that said, Mill Creek Entertainment has a solid track record in delivering faith-based films that reach a crossover audience.
Two quickly come to mind, director Tyler Sansom’s heartfelt I Can, starring Danner Brown in the true life story of one-armed softball player Katelyn Pavey, and writer/director Andrew Hyatt’s faith-based biopic titled The Blind: The True Story of the Robertson Family are just two examples of such faith-based crossover films that have been released on physical media by Mill Creek.Indeed, Hyatt’s film holds the record for the highest grossing Fathom Events film ever … you don’t get that from a limited one-note audience.
Well, guess what, Mill Creek Entertainment has done it again with news this past week that first time director Ellis Black, with a script by actor-turned-screenwriter Don Michael Paul (Tremors: Shrieker Island, Half Past Dead, Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man), will see their crossover faith-based film titled, Finding Faith, making its DVD debut on June 4.
At the core of Finding Faith is a knockout performance by Ashley Bratcher (Unplanned, Princess Cut, The Magic Shed, Pharma) as Victoria “Faith” Walker, a Christian “advice” columnist who gets hit with a double-whammy — a fallout with her singer/songwriter husband (Jonathan Stoddard), who is on the road for up to four months at a time, and the death of her mother, leaving her father (played by none other John Schneider) alone.
She heads home to spend time with her father … and wonders aloud about her faith; about her life. Putting things back together sometimes requires taking everything in your life apart and starting over.
All involved, include nice turns by Robert Peters, Lenita Harris and Vivica A. Fox, make Finding Faith a film that goes well beyond its core faith-based audience and reaches — based on the story, the acting and quality of the film production — a wider audience.
On June 4, on DVD from Mill Creek Entertainment … be sure to check it out, you will not be disappointed!!
