Severin Films Unearths Director Cedric Sundström's Banned Film • The Shadowed Mind • For A Blu-ray Release On Nov. 29

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

Banned.   Lost.   And now found by Severin Films, with MVD Entertainment Group supporting the sales and distribution of the Blu-ray debut on Nov. 29 of South African filmmaker Cedric Sundström’s 1988 mixed-genre chiller, The Shadowed Mind.

Banned, yes, by South Africa and very little, if any, exposure after that.   Lost, yes, for years it was assumed that The Shadowed Mind would never see the light of day (beyond dubious duped VHS-era copies … in a word, dreadful).   However, Severin Films has hooked up with Sundström for a new 2K scan of the director’s own private 35mm print (the only known copy of the film to currently exist) … and, this is the uncut version to boot!

Stephanie (played by Adrienne Pearce — The Bone Snatcher, Tremors: A Cold Day in Hell) has a problem.   Well, at least her father thinks she has a problem.   Certainly, others would love to help her share her problem, which is a compulsion to expose her breasts.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

We find her, at the behest of her father, arriving alone in a taxi at what appears to be an abandoned warehouse in a pretty sketchy part of the city.   Looks can be deceiving as this is actually an off-the-books clinic (an asylum) for the “sexually insane” that is ran by two rather creepy individuals, Dr. Hildesheimer (Towje Kleiner — The Odessa File) and nurse “Helen” (Trisj Downing — Blood Ransom).   At first glance they too could be inmates (that’s harsh, how about “clients”) of such a place.

Once admitted, Stephanie is introduced to the other “clients,” who definitely have issues.   It’s a zoo and soon Stephanie is a willing participant … for someone with sexual issues, the clinic seems to be an asylum run by the inmates … cure, ha!    You can easily see why it was banned in South Africa for the “group sessions” alone.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

However, there’s something more sinister going on.   It seems that one of “clients” is pretty handy with a knife and a series of nasty murders have been taking place in Dr. Hildesheimer’s fun house.   He and the nurse “Helen” are busy covering these up as he’s trying to take his experimental clinic mainstream with outside funding (wouldn’t want any bad news to get out).

Does Stephanie work through her issues?   Does Stephanie get carved up?   Nov. 29 for the big reveal on Blu-ray from Severin Films.

Bonus features include commentary from director Cedric Sundström, the featurette titled “Into The Shadowed Mind” and four short films from Sundström — Suffer Little Children, The Hunter, Summer is Forever and On the Rocks.

Vinegar Syndrome Announces Its Oct. 30 Line-Up On DVD And Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack Film Restorations

Vinegar Syndrome announced this past week it’s October slate of new film restorations headed to the home entertainment marketplace on Oct. 30 as DVD and Blu-ray product offerings.

Topping the list — and yes, that is always a subjective evaluation — is a new 4K restoration of director John Hough’s 1982 film adaptation of Ray Russell’s horror/mystery novel, The Incubus.

A crazed rapist killer — introduced to us in the opening sequence — is on the prowl in the sleepy hamlet of Galen (filmed on location in Guelph, Ontario, Canada — about 20 miles west of Toronto) and somehow a local teen by the name of Tim (Duncan McIntosh) is connected to the “creature” through a series of recurring dreams.

The first attack involves a couple by the name Roy and Mandy (Mitch Martin), who are out camping in the nearby woods.   Roy is murdered and Mandy is viciously attacked, but manages to survive the assault.

She ends up in the local hospital under the care of Dr. Cordell (John Cassavetes), whose daughter just happens to be dating the aforementioned Tim (a small world).   In any case Cordell is shocked at the brutality of the attack upon his patient, who remains in a coma.

Mindy is the first and soon there are more — not so lucky — women, who are raped and brutally murder.   This sets up both a horror tale and a clever whodunit mystery, where the sheriff (John Ireland) is befuddled and a local reporter by the name of Laura Kincaid (Kerrie Keane) thinks that she might have a lead as to who or what might be behind the attacks.  Her premise is that some mumbo jumbo related to the town’s history might be the root cause … it all sounds sort of silly.  Meanwhile, the body count mounts!

A surprise twist at the end — didn’t see that one coming — reveals who the creature is, which is a shape-shifter known as the Incubus … as the credits roll “it” is ready for more!

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyThis Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack release for The Incubus features commentary from the blog group known as The Hysteria Continues!, “trims” and alternate shots, plus three separate video sessions — one with director John Hough, a second with actress Kerrie Keane (Laura) and a third featuring cinematographer Albert J. Dunk.

Next up is director Curtis Harrington’s 1974 theatrical release of The Killing Kind, which will also be a Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack … a new 2K restoration from the original 35mm camera negative.    This is the first time the film will be available on Blu-ray.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Harrington was on a roll during this period with the 1970 MOW starring Anthony Perkins, How Awful About Allan, the 1971 AIP theatrical release of Whoever Slew Auntie Roo? — starring Shelley Winters — and in 1972 United Artists handled the theatrical distribution of What's the Matter with Helen? (teaming Shelley Winters with Debbie Reynolds).

Somehow he ended up with a fly-by-night indie by the name of Media Cinema Group as the distributor for his next film, The Killing Kind.  It opened at the Cannes Film Festival in 1973 and then went dormant.   Finally in March of 1974 it got a quick in-and-out theatrical launch in the L.A. area (and maybe some other markets) and then dropped out of sight.

Harrington and producer George Edwards were then caught up some sort of unspecified “legal issues” and the film disappeared for almost a decade.   The Killing Kind got a VHS launch in the 1980s and over the years there have been a number of DVD editions floating around from various sources.   Toss’em, this Vinegar Syndrome presentation is the one you will want!

The Killing Kind falls right in with How Awful About Allan, Whoever Slew Auntie Roo? and What's the Matter with Helen? as Harrington creates these closed-off, weird worlds, populated by dysfunctional people.   Here we have Terry (John Savage), who is returning home from a rape conviction (he is actually innocent) and heads straight to his mother’s rooming house (played by Ann Sothern).
DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

Mom and son spend some creepy time together catching up and then he shifts his attentions to a new lodger named Lori (played by Cindy Williams, who had just hit it big with American Graffiti … not sure in what order the films were shot, The Killing Kind might have come first in production order).

Terry is just plain creepy — he has a sexual rage; an itch he literally cannot scratch — and after working his way through a cat and a rat, he eventually moves up to killing people, including the vixen, Tina (played by Sue Bernard — Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!, Necromancy, Machismo: 40 Graves for 40 Guns), who was responsible for his prison stint.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyThe big question is how long does Lori survive — she gets plenty of sexually oriented warnings.   And what of mom?   The crazy fruit doesn’t fall far from the tree, metaphorically speaking!   Does Terry turn on mom?   Who will rent the rooms and take care of him?

Bonus features include a vintage commentary track featuring writers David Decoteau and David Del Valle, a vintage video session with Harrington and the featurette titled “Harrington on Harrington.”

Also heading home from Vinegar Syndrome on Oct. 30 is Tiny Tim’s turn as the mentally deranged Mervo in the 1987 direct-to-video release of Blood Harvest (4K restoration) and a new 2K restoration of DEF By Temptation — both are Blu-ray/DVD Combo Packs — and adult filmmaker Emilio Portici’s 1973 erotic horror entry, The Bride’s Initiation, starring Carol Connors and Marc Brook (available on DVD).

Icarus Films Teams With The Kimstim Collection For The Mar. 17 DVD Release Of Documentary Filmmaker Jonathan Nossiter’s Mondovino: The Series

DVD and Blu-ray Release Report
If you enjoy wine and movies about wine, which seems like a winning combination, then you’ve likely savored director Alexander Payne’s 2004 Best Picture nominee, Sideways and writer/director Randall Miller’s 2008 film gem about the 1976 “Judgment of Paris” story, Bottle Shock, starring Alan Rickman, Chris Pine and Bill Pullman.

Good films indeed, but if you are really into wine — really, really into wine — then you will need to check out the DVD release coming from Icarus Films and The Kimstim Collection on Mar. 17.

It’s filmmaker Jonathan Nossiter’s Mondovino: The Series — note, this is not the 2004 feature-length documentary of the same name, but the complete ten-part series that Nossiter filmed over a four-year period.    This is the real deal, a four-disc collection featuring ten separate “wine adventures” (filmed in five different languages) derived from Nossiter’s journeys to the various wine producing regions of the world.

It is a real eye-opener.  There’s snob wine and industrial wine (crude distinctions to be sure) and a war rages between the two camps, but it’s all good (yup, it’s ALL GOOD)!!!

After you’ve finished Mondovino: The Series you will know your wines … school is in session, so enjoy the journey.

Virgil Films And Entertainment's Art Machine Heads To DVD On Apr. 29

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Virgil Films & Entertainments has selected Apr. 29 as the DVD debut date for writer/director Doug Karr’s Art Machine.

What something is worth is what people are willing to pay for it.   That reality is only beginning to sink into the head of soon-to-be 18 year-old Declan Truss (Joseph Cross).   For the past 12 years he has been a New York City art protégé.   His paintings have sold to collectors, even though a cursory evaluation of his work would leave the average person shrugging their shoulders and wondering why; what’s with the buzz … nothing special here.

His mother, Prudence (Joey Lauren Adams), has exploited, manipulated and has even dealt out sexual favors to ensure that her son’s fame — or the illusion of that fame — has grown and been carefully nurtured over the years.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Basically, “I am legend” because mommy says so.   But when his carefully crafted world intersects with that of Cassandra (Jessica Szohr), a rebellious “artist” with a flair for performance art — who has a cadre of friends that are free-spirited creative types living the life in the Bushwick area of the city — all bets are off!

Is he an artist?  An artist with real talent, or is he a fraud?   How do you unlearn everything you know, or think you know, without the wheels coming off?   That’s Declan’s challenge … and he has precious little time to sort it out!

Capital Games On DVD From Breaking Glass Pictures On Feb. 11

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Prolific romance novelist and former Seattle beat cop, G.A.Hauser, will see her 2010 best-selling gay fiction novel, Capital Games, released as a feature-length motion picture on Feb. 11 courtesy of Breaking Glass Pictures.

Actor-turned-director Ilo Orleans handled the film adaption, with Eric Presnall (as Eric in the Who Let the Dogs Out reality television series) taking on the role of Steve Miller, a form Los Angeles cop who turns in his badge — and his high stress job — for what he thinks in a more lucrative and far less stressful career in advertising.

He gets a rude awakening when he finds himself in direct competition over the landing of a key account that he’s been courting when an imported advertising and marketing “gunslinger” named Mark Richfield (Gregor Cosgrove), who comes complete with a smug attitude and a shrew-like fiancé in tow.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
The agency head, wants to build them into a team and comes up with a retreat idea — “a team-building” challenge, if you will — in the rugged landscape of New Mexico (shot on location).   It is a simple idea, work together, overcome your conflict and mistrust of each other and everyone will be a winner.   What takes place between the two out there in the wilds will change everything … in a most unexpected way.

Behind-the-scenes production featurette.

Universal Studios Home Entertainment's Curse Of Chucky On DVD And Blu-ray On Oct. 8

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey, Chucky
It was a seemingly normal day at the MGM/UA Home Video headquarters in Culver City when Suds, my assistant, buzzed in to say that a special guest had just arrived … not just any special guest, but a Hollywood star.

“June Allison?” I asked.   “No, shorter,” smiled Suds.

“Mickey Rooney?”   She could hardly contain herself, “No, even shorter.”

And then suddenly standing there in the doorway to my office was none other than the star of United Artists’ recent theatrical hit Child’s Play.  It was none other than Chucky himself.

Now the only reason I bring this Spring of 1989 encounter with Chucky up is that Universal Studios Home Entertainment announced this past week that his last film outing, Curse of Chucky, will be heading to DVD and Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack (with UltraViolet) on Oct. 8.

Let’s get a few things out in the open.  First, Chucky is real; a little person — I signed a non-disclosure agreement back then that I honor to this day not to reveal his real name.  I can tell you this much, he has a child-like voice, so producer David Kirschner and screenwriter Don Mancini recruited Brad Dourif to provide a more sinister tone to the character — it was a masterstroke; genius.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report
So you’ve learned that Chucky is a real actor (not some mechanical thingamajig or CGI), has a child-like voice (hence the need for Dourif) and one other thing.   He has a temper!

On this particular day he had stopped by Filmland in Culver City to approve the packaging for the April of 1989 VHS launch of Child’s Play (had a clause in his contract that gave him artwork approval … what a pain that is when the talent has artwork approval).

The conversation was pleasant at first.   A little chit-chat as we walked down to creative services to review the selections.    But once Chucky saw the choices he blew his top, grabbed a pair of scissors and attacked me.   “Not scary enough,” he kept screaming!

Eventually we calmed him down, made the packaging more menacing (see the final VHS sleeve) and he went on his merry way.
DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey, Chucky

It’s now the 25th anniversary of the original Child’s Play theatrical launch and Universal has the sixth installment in this venerable horror franchise ready for fans to enjoy.    How this film franchise ended up at Universal is a story for another day, but let’s just say it had to do with an Australian conman, a clueless Hollywood mogul and a little something called a force majeure.

Once again the team of Chucky and Brad Dourif work their magic in both rated and unrated versions of Curse of Chucky.   Bonus features include commentary from director Don Mancini, make-up and f/x wizard Tony Gardner and the film’s co-star Fiona Dourif, a gag reel, deleted scenes and the featurette titled “Playing with Dolls: The Making of Curse of Chucky.”

Exclusive to the Blu-ray SKU are two additional featurettes.

Robert Williams Mr. Bitchin' Documentary On DVD From Cinema Libre On July 30

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Documentary filmmaker Mary Reese took an intimate look at the life and times of cult painter, publisher and cartoonist Robert Williams and came up with a fascinating film “portrait” of the man and his art in the documentary titled Robert Williams Mr. Bitchin' … due out on DVD from Cinema Libre on July 30.

Williams could draw anything from an early age.   The 1960s car culture of Southern California fascinated him … so New Mexico high school dropout came west and became something of a legend over the years with his unique blend of cartoon-like illustrations and vibrant paintings … books, rock album covers and a following of collectors eager to adorn their walls with his “visions” are fully explored in this one-of-a-kind documentary.

Bonus features include an art gallery of his works.
