Mill Creek Entertainment Announces The Return Of Ultraman On Apr. 13 With The Blu-ray Release Of Ultraman Leo: The Complete Series

Fans have been waiting since October for the next Ultraman announcement from Mill Creek Entertainment.   That is when Ultraman Taro: The Complete Series, a six-disc Blu-ray collection was announced for release on Jan. 12.   Each day that passes, anxiety grows … until now!!

The date has been assigned, Apr. 13, for the next installment; the next Blu-ray collection … drum roll please!!   Next up will Ultraman Leo: The Complete Series, also a six-disc collection and featuring Digital Copy.

These are dark times for Earth and the Monster Attack Crew, but an Ultra Warrior from the destroyed planet L77 has traced the culprits to Earth and wants revenge.   The same destructive force, Magma, along with his warrior Giras, “Red” and “Black,” have attacked Ultraseven and crippled him to the point where he can no longer defend the planet.   What to do?

Ultraseven has taken the human form of Dan Moroboshi (Kôji Moritsugu) and he takes the new arrival, Gen Ôtori (Ryû Manatsu), under his wing and trains him to become the next defender of Earth against the onslaught of Magma and his minions.   Can he put revenge aside and focus on the task before him … only time will tell, which is running short.

Ultraman Leo: The Complete Series, from Mill Creek Entertainment, is presented in Japanese with English subtitles.

 

 

 

 

Arrow Video Looks To Apr. 20 For The Blu-ray Release Of Director Jack Hill's Switchblade Sisters

Arrow Video, with domestic sales and distribution expertise provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has a newly-prepared Blu-ray presentation of writer/director Jack Hill’s 1975 exploitation gem, Switchblade Sisters, ready for grindhouse fans to enjoy on Apr. 20.

High school is a place where young minds are formed, hormones run wild and in Jack Hill’s world, gangs run the show.   The new kid, Maggie (Joanne Nail in her feature film debut — The Gumball Rally, The Visitor, Full Moon High), transfers to a new school and before she can say “hello,” she is mistakenly arrested as a member of The Dagger Debs and tossed into juvenal hall.

Here, “Mom” Smackley (Kate Murtagh — Farewell, My Lovely, The Car, Waxwork II: Lost in Time), the lovely lady in charge, takes a liking to her, being “fresh meat” after all, and is hot to introduce the innocent Maggie to the merits of lesbian love in a prison setting.

Fortunately, The Dagger Debs leader, Lace (Robbie Lee — Big Bad Mama … and later a voice actress for such kid shows as Rainbow Brite and The Get Along Gang), comes to Maggie’s aid and makes her a member of The Dagger Debs.  

Now, if you’ve seen Grease, you know that the female gang, The Pink Ladies, had their male counterparts, The T-Birds.   Such is the case here as The Dagger Debs have The Silver Daggers, run by Dominic (Asher Brauner), who quickly “initiates” Maggie into the ways of high school gang life.   We will come to learn that this doesn’t sit well Dominic’s main-squeeze, Lace … but we will save that for the third act.

Harkening back to Grease, The T-Birds had their gang rival and so do The Silver Daggers, which is a run by Crabs (Chase Newhart).   He is smarter and meaner than Dominic, who mistakenly takes a switchblade to a gunfight — at the local roller rink, no less — and that’s it for him.   Maggie, while Lace is sidelined (don’t ask), takes over The Dagger Debs, including Patch (Monica Gayle), Bunny (Janice Karman) and Donut (Kitty Bruce), cuts ties with The Silver Daggers and teams up with the cross-town black girl gang run by Muff (Marlene Clark) and rebrands the new operation as The Jezebels.  

Maggie has gone from new girl to juvey girl to gang girl to gang queen and she’s still in high school.   We can’t wait until she gets to college … if she survives that long.   Crabs is still out there and high school girls can be a very jealous breed.

Filmmaker Jack Hill was at the top of his game with Switchblade Sisters, he knew what worked and had delivered such classics in the women-in-prison and blaxploitation film genres as The Big Doll House, The Big Bird Cage, Coffy and Foxy Brown, but surprisingly after this he would exit the business, but his mark had been made.

Bonus goodies include a newly minted commentary featuring Samm Deighan and Kat Ellinger, director Elijah Drenner’s 2016 documentary, We’re The Jezebels, the featurette titled “Gangland” (Drenner and Hill revisit the filming locations) and more.

 

 

 

Paramount Home Media Tabs Mar. 23 As Street Date For The Blu-ray Release Of Best Picture Essentials: 10-Movie Collection

Paramount Home Media announced this past week that Mar. 23 will be the street for the Blu-ray set titled Best Picture Essentials: 10-Movie Collection.

Timed to be in place at retail prior to this year’s Oscar telecast on Apr. 25 (postponed as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic), the collection features a selection of ten Best-Picture winners, kicking off with the only silent film to win the Best Picture Oscar, director William A. Wellman’s 1927 World War I fighter pilot saga, Wings, starring Clara Bow, Charles 'Buddy' Rogers and Richard Arlen.   The first Oscar award ceremony took place at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel on May 16, 1929 (films eligible for the years 1927 and 1928).

Chronologically, the next film in the collection is director George Cukor’s 1964 musical, My Fair Lady, teaming Audrey Hepburn with Rex Harrison.  The film was nominated for 12 Oscars, winning for Best Picture, Rex Harrison captured the Best Actor Oscar (he was nominated the previous year for Cleopatra), George Cukor was named Best Director (his only win of five nominations in that category … Born Yesterday, A Double Life, The Philadelphia Story, Little Women being his other Best Director nominations) and film won in five of the production categories … of note, Audrey Hepburn was not nominated and both Gladys Cooper and Stanley Holloway lost out in the Supporting Actress and Actor categories.

One of the great films ever made is the 1972 film release of The Godfather.  Nominated for 11 Oscars, The Godfather won Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Actor for Marlon Brando (his sixth of eight Oscar nominations, with his only other win for On the Waterfront).

Ironically, director Francis Ford Coppola lost the Best Director Oscar to Bob Fosse (Cabaret), but did not go home empty handed, since he shared Oscar laurels with Mario Puzo for the script … Robert Duvall, James Caan and Al Pacino were all nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category, but likely saw their support divided allowing Joel Grey to collect the award for his performance in Cabaret.

We next jump to 1983 and director James L. Brooks’ film adaptation of the Larry McMurtry best-seller, Terms of Endearment, which was nominated for 11 Oscars, winning Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay Oscars for James L. Brooks … as producer, director and writer).   Jack Nicholson won the Oscar for Best Support Actor (nominated for a dozen Oscars for acting, capturing wins for One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and As Good as It Gets) and Shirley MacLaine and Debra Winger went head-to-head in the Best Actress category, with MacLaine walking away with the gold (her only win after five previous attempts).

It’s the 1995 Oscar telecast (for the 1994 films nominated) and director Robert Zemeckis’ film adaptation of the Winston Groom novel, Forrest Gump, was the big winner that night, winning Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Tom Hanks (his second Oscar win, Philadelphia the previous year … how he didn’t win Best Actor for Saving Private Ryan is one of those Oscar mysteries that crop up from time to time) and Eric Roth won for Best Adapted Screenplay.

It should be noted, the 1994 crop of Best Picture nominees included both Pulp Fiction and The Shawshank Redemption … wow, what a year!!

Next up in this ten-film collection is director Anthony Minghella’s 1996 film adaptation of Michael Ondaatj’s 1992 best-seller, The English Patient, starring Ralph Fiennes, Juliette Binoche, Kristin Scott Thomas and Willem Dafoe.  The film was nominated for 12 Oscars, winning for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Supporting Actress (Juliette Binoche) … Ralph Fiennes and Kristin Scott Thomas were nominated in the Best Actor and Best Actress categories respectively and Minghella as nominated for this script.

The story of the ill-fated maiden voyage of the RMS Titanic got the James Cameron treatment in 1997 with the Christmas-season super-blockbuster release of Titanic, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet and Billy Zane, with stellar supporting performances from Kathy Bates (as Molly Brown), Frances Fisher, Gloria Stuart and Cameron regular Bill Paxton.   The film received 14 Oscar nominations and recorded wins for Best Picture, Best Director and just about every technical award possible, but both Kate Winslet and Gloria Stuart both lost out for playing the same character is the Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress categories.

Rounding out the collection are director Sam Mendes’ American Beauty (1999 … Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Kevin Spacey and Best Screenplay for Alan Ball’s original script), filmmaker Ridley Scott’s Gladiator (2000 … Best Picture and Best Actor for Russell Crowe) and finally the Coen Brothers’ 2007 gem, No Country for Old Men, which saw brothers Joel and Ethan Coen win Oscars for producing, directing and writing (adaptation), with Javier Bardem chilling performance as Anton Chigurh capturing the Best Supporting Actor Oscar.

 

 

 

Blue Underground Preps 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack Edition Of Director Don Taylor's The Final Countdown For Release On Apr. 27

Blue Underground, with sales and distribution support provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has a new 4K film restoration (from the original 35mm camera negative) of director Don Taylor’s 1980 sci-fi thriller, The Final Countdown, ready for a 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack rollout on Apr. 27.

This film surprise arrived in theatres in August of 1980 and as with The Philadelphia Experiment (1984) and Night of the Comet (also 1984), the writing team of Thomas Hunter, Peter Powell and David Ambrose exceeded expectations with a clever script that actually overcame some questionable casting decisions (we won’t mention any names).   All three of these “surprises” have aged well.

The U.S.S. Nimitz, yes, the real aircraft carrier, is the centerpiece of the film as it is sent back in time (with its crew and aircraft compliment) to the eve of World War II and the fateful events of Pearl Harbor that are about to unfold.   The paradox that the captain, played by Kirk Douglas, is faced with, does he warn Pearl Harbor and turn the Nimitz loose on the Japanese fleet — he has the power to annihilate the Japanese attack force and change history.   Or, does he try to get back to his proper time period and avoid messing with the established timeline.

He’s got another problem, there are people from the period who have come in contact with the ship and its crew … how does he handle them?   They know a secret that could also change history.   The problem, get back to the present time period and let events unfold, or if that isn’t possible, what actions should be taken!!

Bonus features include commentary featuring the director of photography, Victor J. Kemper, a video session with Troma’s Lloyd Kaufman, who was an associate producer on the film and the featurette titled ‘Starring the Jolly Rogers.”

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has added documentary filmmaker Lesley Chilcott’s six-part mini-series, Helter Skelter: An American Myth, to its February release calendar.   It will be available as a double-disc DVD edition on Feb. 9.

With the success of Quinten Tarantino’s 2019 film release of Once Upon a Time … In Hollywood, Charles Manson and his Spahn Ranch collection of cult followers, renewed interested in the Manson Family sparked this look-back at the times, the legend, the crimes of Manson and his misguided followers.

Included in the mix are interviews with former Manson Family members, including Snake (aka: Dianne Lake) and Gypsy (aka: Catherine Share), journalist Ivor Davis (author of: “Manson Exposed: A Reporter’s 50-Year Journey into Madness and Murder”), Bill McBride (one of the Manson trial jurors), Louise LaBianca (daughter of Leno LaBianca) and more.  

Plus there are archival footage, newly unearthed material and more.
