Icarus Films Tabs July 13 For The Domestic DVD Debut Of Director Marc Rosthermund's It's For Your Own Good

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

Icarus Films will be teaming up with Distrib Films on July 13 for the domestic DVD debut of German filmmaker Marc Rothemund’s comedy release of It’s for Your Own Good.

Their children are growing up and have relationships of their own and three fathers, with three daughters, are in total panic mode over the prospect of having idiots for future sons-in-law.

We start with a top-notch lawyer by the name of Arthur (Heiner Lauterbach — who plays Gerhard in Granny Nanny, which is also heading home from Icarus and Distrib Films on June 15), who is happy-as-a-clam that his daughter, Antonia (Janina Uhse — How About Adolf?, Berlin, Berlin), is about to marry an attorney that he approves of.  The wedding day has arrived!

That all blows up when Antonia dumps her betrothed and takes up with an itinerant radical, Alex (Jacob Matschenz — Chasing Paper Birds, My Wonderful Wanda), who seems to have no skill-set other than protesting anything and everything that he disagrees with.   To Arthur, this prospect is a non-starter.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

This horror strikes close to home as Arthur’s two brothers-in-law are having the same problem with their daughters, Arthur’s nieces.   Bernhard (Jürgen Vogel — Familie!, Emmas Glück, Kleine Haie) is beside himself that his daughter, Luna (Lisa-Marie Koroll — Below Sweden, Bibi & Tina) is sleeping with a man who makes his living as a photographer … that can’t be all that bad, right?  At least he has a job; a profession.

Wrong, Pierre (Andreas Pietschmann) is not just any photographer, he specializes in photographing nudes, but that’s the least of it.  What’s driving poor Bernhard crazy is that Pierre is old enough to be Luna’s father!!

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

Meanwhile, the other brother-in-law, Yussuf (Hilmi Sözer — Brother and Sister, Elephant Heart), is troubled that his daughter, Sophie (Lara Aylin Winkler — Rate Your Date, A Regular Woman), is making poor choices and that her latest fling, Andi (Junis Marlon), might be dealing drugs!!

A united front is what is called for, so Arthur, Bernhard and Yussuf decide to take matters into their own hands and come up with a plan to drive these unwanted suitors away … but how?   That’s the fun of it!!

It’s For Your Own Good is presented in German with English subtitles.

Documentary Filmmaker Nathan Crane's Cancer: The Integrative Perspective To Make Its DVD Debut From Cinema Libre On June 22

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

One supposes that author-turned-filmmaker, Nathan Crane, the founder of The Panacea Community and the president of Panacea Publishing, could have continued to play the film festival circuit for the foreseeable future with his documentary, Cancer: The Integrative Perspective.

Consider this, it opened in late December of 2019, and even with the hurdles of finding venues during the Covid-19 lockdown, it played throughout all of 2020 and into the current year … and, at last count, had piled up an impressive 18 festival awards, including the Award of Excellence: Documentary Feature at the Accolade Global Film Competition and Best Documentary at the Eurasia Film Festival.

Word arrived this past week from Cinema Libre that a wider audience will finally have access to Cancer: The Integrative Perspective on DVD on June 22.

Crane’s insightful look at the prevention, healing and reversal of what some call the “Cancer Pandemic,” not just here in the United States, but on global basis, focuses on the science of better nutrition and a more pro-active approach to fighting the scourge of cancer.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

With experts gathered from around the world, Crane’s film engages in a discussion of what can be done to promote better eating and health choices and, in the process demonstrates, through science, that groups who dramatically reduce commercially processed foods in their diet have a significantly lower incidence of cancer.

At the core of the documentary is the urging of those who support more traditional approaches to the prevention and treatment of cancer to actively engage with those who look to alternative methods — encouraging them not to be at odds with each other, but to find common ground; to come together.

Cancer: The Integrative Perspective on DVD from Cinema Libre on June 22.

Mill Creek Entertainment Celebrates The 20th Anniversary Of Director Dennis Dugan's Saving Silverman With Its Blu-ray Debut On July 13

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyMill Creek Entertainment has tabbed July 13 as the 20th Anniversary Blu-ray debut date for director Dennis Dugan’s buddy comedy, Saving Silverman, starring Jason Briggs, Jack Black and Steve Zahn, plus Amanda Peet as the “evil” woman and Amanda Detmer as the soon-to-be-nun!!

Darren Silverman (Jason Briggs — American Pie, Loser, My Best Friend's Girl, etc.) is a member of the Diamonds in the Rough band, which was formed with his grade-school buddies, Wayne (Steve Zahn) and J.D. (Jack Black), as a tribute to their all-time favorite recording artist, Neil Diamond.   The band defines them and it is the link to their life-long friendship.

After a gig one night, Darren meets a very smart and very attractive woman named Judith Fessbegger (Amanda Peet) and she takes total control of his life, using sex — or the lack of it — to separate him from his band mates.  She has set her mind on breaking up the band!   She’s evil in Wayne and J.D.’s eyes … and something must be done about her!!

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

There are simple solutions and creative solutions, but when you are dealing with the likes of Steven Zahn and Jack Black those types of solutions are nowhere to be found.   Instead, these two knuckleheads hit upon the idea of kidnapping the evil Judith, which, of course, will be a disaster.

Meanwhile, they have something of a “Plan B,” which is to reunite Darren with his grade-school sweetheart, Sandy (Amanda Detmer), but she is in the final stages of becoming … a nun!!

Saving Silverman is great fun, with the solution to the problem of how Darren is to escape from Fessbegger’s evil spell being either killing her, or kidnapping Neil Diamond.   Hmmmmm, those don’t seem like rational options.

Bayview Entertainment Looks To July 27 As The DVD Release Date For Writer/Director Jason Impey's Zombie Lover

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

Bayview Entertainment announced this past week that British writer/director Jason Impey’s Zombie Lover will be making its way to these shores on July 27.

A mad scientist, star-crossed lovers and a zombie plague all combine for a wild romp in the English woods.   We begin this horror adventure with an introduction to Diller Slater (Kemal Yildirim — Psychopaths, The Lorelei, Abduction, Abduction 2: Revenge of the Hive Queen), who is little more than a street punk who finds himself in trouble and on the run.   As luck would have it, and we use the word “luck” in a very guarded sense, he happens upon an old friend of his, Stacey Gallagher (Lianne Robertson), who he has always had the hots for.

Since they last saw each other, Stacey has made some bad choices and is now married to a guy named Michael (Max Fellows), who is not only insanely jealous — to the point of having Stacey spied upon — but is abusive as well.   But there is something else about Michael that we will soon learn that is even scarier.

Seeing Stacey is too much for our boy Diller and he soon has her undressed and in bed when just then Michael, who has been tipped off to the dalliance between his wife and this stranger, barges in on the love-makers.   A battle royal ensues and Diller beats Michael to death … what to do, what to do?   Get rid of the body of course!!

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyActually, for Stacey this solves a lot of problems, and for Diller, this accident is wonderful, he can now have her all to himself.   Just a drive out to a secluded spot in the woods, dig a hole and be rid of Michael.   Problem solved.

This is where Zombie Lover takes a hard turn from an impulsive murder tale and a body dump to a horror story that gets weirder and weirder as things progress.

When the lovers open the trunk of the car to dispose of Michael’s body, they get quite the shock as he’s not dead, well, that’s not totally true, he is dead, but now he is “undead;” a zombie!!   Before Diller can finally be done with him, Michael manages to take a bite out of Stacey, which starts the process of her becoming a zombie as well.   It will take some time for the process to run its cycle.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

It gets a little complicated, but it seems that Michael has been in league with a neo-Nazi scientist by the name of Ilsa (Eileen Daly — Razor Blade Smile, Pervirella, Monsters of the Id), who has resurrected Nazi experiments from World War II and is in the process of building a new Nazi zombie army (of course, to conquer the world).

Meanwhile, Diller and the not-looking-so-good Stacey take refuge in a dilapidated cabin in the woods, and when they are not trying to avoid Ilsa’s zombie hoard, the pair do find the time to return to their love-making which Michael had so rudely interrupted — which is now kind of creepy since Stacey has something of an undead look on her face as Diller has his way with her.

Jason Impey’s Zombie Lover is a mixed-genre romp, that manages to pay homage to the Ilsa, She Wolf of the SS movies of the 1970s, mix in a little film noir murder tale and also let the zombies loose … July 27 on DVD from Bayview Entertainment to find out what happens to Diller and his true love, Stacey.

Arrow Video Prepares 4K Ultra HD And Blu-ray Editions Of Director David Lynch's Dune For Release On August 31

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

Arrow Video, with domestic sales and distribution expertise provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has a new 4K film restoration of director David Lynch’s 1984 film adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune ready for a 4K Ultra HD release on Aug. 31.

This is a new restoration from the film’s original camera negative and the release configuration from Arrow Video will be a three-SKU affair.   There will be a 4K Ultra HD edition, with a bonus Blu-ray disc (additional bonus features, more on that in a moment), a limited edition SteelBook 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack (with the aforementioned Blu-ray bonus disc) and a double-disc Blu-ray selection.

Some 14 years before Lynch’s film arrived in theatres during the Christmas season of 1984, the Hollywood trade press was alive with news that film producer and director Roger Corman, yes, THE Roger Corman, had snapped up the rights to Herbert’s 1965 best-selling sci-fi novel.   It is hard to imagine a Roger Corman-version of Dune.

In any case, he parted with the rights and Planet of the Apes’ producer Arthur P. Jacobs took over and began planning for the film’s production, with Haskell Wexler in place as the director.   However, in June of 1973 Jacobs dropped dead of a heart attack and that was the end of that.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

Six years went by and nothing.   A false start with Jodorowsky set to direct blew up … and then another false start followed, with producer Dino De Laurentiis set to begin production with none other than Ridley Scott as the director.   That too fell through and Ridley Scott moved on to direct Blade Runner.

Finally, De Laurentiis’ daughter, Raffaella, who had hit it big with her production of Conan the Barbarian, convinced her father to get things under way again with David Lynch as the director … he had been nominated for directing and writing Oscars for his October of 1980 film release of The Elephant Man.   The film itself was nominated for Best Picture.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

Production began in Mexico in March of 1983 and that would go on for nearly six months.   A full year of post-production followed and the film finally opened in December of 1984 … almost 20 years since the book was published.   In retrospect, it was probably too much for just one film.

As to bonus goodies, Arrow Video has loaded the various Dune home entertainment release configurations with a ton of extras.   We begin with two newly-prepared commentary options … the first with film historian Paul M. Sammon (“Future Noir: The Making of Blade Runner,” “The Complete Aliens Companion”) and the second features Mike White of The Production Booth podcast.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

Also to be found among the bonus selections is director Jarrord Harlow’s 2003 documentary, Impressions of Dune, five vintage featurettes — “Destination Dune,” “Designing Dune,” “Dune F/X,” “Dune Models & Miniatures” and “Dune Costumes” — 11 deleted scenes and a massive stills gallery.

The companion Blu-ray disc (with all three release SKUs) contains additional bonuses, including the debut of the new feature-length documentary titled The Sleeper Must Awaken: Making Dune, two new featurettes — “Beyond Imagination: Merchandising Dune” and “Prophecy Fulfilled: Scoring Dune” —  a new video session with make-up effects artist Giannetto de Rossi and a trio of vintage video sessions with production coordinator Golda Offenheim, make-up effects artist Christopher Tucker and actor Paul Smith (The Beast Rabban).

There will likely be more additions to the bonus selections as we get closer to that Aug. 31 street date.

AGFA Restores Directo Sidney J. Furie's The Leather Boys For A Blu-ray Release On June 29

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

AGFA (American Genre Film Archive) will be joining forces with Shout! Factory on June 29 for the Blu-ray release of director Sidney J. Furie’s 1964 (1965 domestic) mixed-genre, and yet decidedly “Kitchen Sink,” film release of The Leather Boys.

This new film restoration is from the original 35mm camera negative.

At its core, The Leather Boys is a British post-war “Kitchen Sink” melodrama about disaffected lower-class English youth … gritty, realistic, depressing.   But it also is a motorcycle flick, popular during the period, especially in the United States beginning with Marlon Brando in The Wild One and during the years that followed with such gems as The Wild Angels, The Born Losers, She-Devils on Wheels, Easy Rider … easily a whole genre onto its on.

The Leather Boys is also one of the early gay-themed films.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

Regardless of where you peg it, The Leather Boys, is a well-acted film, with Rita Tushingham — fresh from her debut performance in Tony Richardson’s A Taste of Honey — shinning as the miserable, self-centered, manipulative “Dot,” who makes Reggie’s (Colin Campbell — Saturday Night Out) life absolutely miserable.

As to bonus features, there is commentary with director Sidney J. Furie and biographer Daniel Kremer (“Sidney J. Furie: Life and Films”), video sessions with both Rita Tushingham and Dudley Sutton (as Pete) and the 1967 short film titled Consenting Adults: A Study of Homosexuality.

For the record, this Jason Statham revenge thriller comes home with an ARR of just 67 days.
