What could be better than
being a young, single and attractive woman living in the glamorous city of Los
Angeles? Life has to be just
peachy! Right?
In Well Go U.S.A.’s Sept.
3 Blu-ray and DVD release of writer/director Christie Will’s well-observed romantic
comedy, Slightly Single in L.A., we learn quickly that looks can be
deceiving. Very deceiving!
We suspect — since
Christie Will not only directed the film but also wrote it — that much of what
her main character, Dale (played by notable voice talent Lacey Chabert — Family
Guy, Young Justice, etc. — who is making one of her all too rare
appearances in front of the camera), experiences are based on her own
observations of the L.A./Hollywood dating scene. Probably first hand!
Dale would like a secure and
loving relationship, but it seems from the vignettes that every guy she dates
is an insecure phoney (great lines and clever set-ups, plus some nice sight
gags come at you rat-a-tat-tat manner). With
Slightly
Single in L.A., one can’t help but recall the words from that Johnny
Lee tune, “Lookin’ For Love,” from Urban Cowboy — “I was
lookin' for love in all the wrong places.”
There is, however, hope …
there’s always hope, even when things go horribly wrong again and again (think:
nightmare). The light at the end of the
love tunnel in this case might just be an old friend named Zach (Kip Pardue — Phantom,
Hostel:
Part III, The Briefcase), who has been riding high of late with some
newfound fame … but you never know. Is
he still the same, or has fame turned him into just another insecure phoney?
A nice ensemble cast that
includes Chris Kattan, Haylie Duff and Jenna Dewan-Tatum keeps the proceedings
light and frothy.
