20th
Century-Fox Home Entertainment will be moving director David Leitch’s summer
blockbuster, The Deadpool 2, to the home entertainment marketplace on Aug.
21 with an ARR of 95 days.
It is interesting that
both Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment and 20th Century-Fox
Home Entertainment are both moving summertime super-hero film franchise
blockbusters to the home entertainment market prior to Labor Day. That was traditionally verboten, but speed, it seems, is of the essence these days.
This latest installment
in the studio’s lucrative X-Man franchise has pulled in $314.6
million in the domestic market since its mid-May theatrical rollout, which
certainly qualifies it as one of those “blockbusters.”
Planned for release are 4K
Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack and stand-alone Blu-ray and DVD editions. Additionally, the Blu-ray and 4K Ultra
HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack SKUs contain two viewing options — the R-rated theatrical
cut and an unrated “Super Duper $@%!#& Cut,” which features an additional
15 minutes worth of footage.
What fate awaits The
Deadpool
franchise at Disney remains to be seen.
Bob Iger gave it the “royal wave” in the Hollywood Report (Dec. 14, 2017) when he is quoted as saying, “It
clearly has been and will be Marvel branded. But we think there might be an opportunity for
a Marvel-R brand for something like Deadpool.” He continued, “As long as
we let the audiences know what's coming, we think we can manage that fine.”
Not exactly a ringing
endorsement … remember, this is the same studio head that thinks Song
of the South is racist and refuses to release it to the home
entertainment marketplace.
But we digress, this
piece is about the home entertainment launch of The Deadpool 2, not its
possible future demise.
Bonus features include
commentary from former stuntman-turned-director David Leitch (Atomic
Blonde), who is joined by Ryan Reynolds and screenwriters Rhett Reese
and Paul Wernick, a gag reel, deleted and extended scenes, Easter Eggs and
alternate takes, which is titled, “Until Your Face Hurts.”
Additionally, there are
seven featurettes — “The Most Important X-Force Member,” “Deadpool Family
Values: Cast of Characters,” “David Leitch Not Lynch: Directing DP2,” “Roll
with the Punches: Action and Stunts,” “The Deadpool Prison Experiment,” “Chess
with Omega Red” and “Swole and Sexy.”
