MVD Entertainment Group
announced this past week that its next addition on Blu-ray to its popular
Marquee Collection promotional banner will be actor-turned-director Henry
Winkler’s 1988 bittersweet comedy, Memories of Me.
The street date for Memories
of Me will be Nov. 27 and this will be the first time on Blu-ray for
this film starring Billy Crystal, Alan King and JoBeth Williams — with a script
from Billy Crystal and four-time Oscar-nominee Eric Roth (with a win for Forrest
Gump).
Billy Crystal plays Dr.
Abbie Polin, a New York City-based doctor with some stress-related health
issues … a recent heart attack was the perfect message, “slow down!” So with girlfriend Lisa (JoBeth Williams) in
tow he heads out to LA LA Land to visit his father, which is another
“stresser.” They don’t get along.
Fellow comedian Alan King
plays Crystal’s father, Abe, a life-long “film extra” … indeed, he is known in
the film industry as the “King of the Extras.”
He doesn’t ever say anything, he just shows up, does his thing, which
could be nothing more than one of those background people that wander through a
scene, and then moves on to his next assignment. A total pro who knows everyone in the
business.
Most of the film involves
Crystal and King playing off of each other — funny stuff, anger stuff, angst
stuff, entertainment insider stuff (studio behind-the-scenes, famous watering
holes) but mainly them not getting along.
Lisa, however, thinks that Abe is absolutely wonderful.
A crisis arises that puts
things into prospective for Abbie and puts him on a mission on behalf of his
father that is both funny and poignant.
Memories of Me joins Art School Confidential, Bright
Lights, Big City and a double-disc special edition of Basic
Instinct 2 as Marquee Collection releases during the month of November.
