Word arrived from VCI
Entertainment this past week that the 1935 12-chapter theatrical serial
adaptation of Hal Forrest’s venerable action comic strip, Tailspin Tommy and the Great Air
Mystery, will be available as both double-disc DVD and Blu-ray selections
on Dec. 11.
This is a brand new
hi-def transfer of director Ray Taylor’s nearly four-hour serial from the
original 35mm film elements. And, word
is that 2019 will see a number of new restorations for serials from the
Universal Pictures vintage library being made available on both Blu-ray and DVD
(many for the first time) by VCI Entertainment.
The all-star cast
includes Clark Williams (Werewolf of London) as Tailspin
Tommy Tompkins, Jean Rogers (who would go on to star as Dale Arden in the first
of three Flash Gordon serials the following year) and three-time Emmy
Awards nominee Noah Beery Jr. (The Rockford Files) as Tommy’s
sidekick, Skeeter Milligan.
