Only last week we were
praising Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment for taking their time and not
rushing director Brad Bird’s Incredibles 2 to market by selecting
Nov. 6, which yielded a leisurely ARR of 144 days.
And then this week they
turned around and did exactly the opposite and dumped director Peyton Reed’s
Marvel Studio’s summer hit film release of Ant-Man and the Wasp into an Oct. 16
window, which is likely beyond the pre-book date (not that it matters).
The ARR works out to 102
days. The film has pulled in a solid $214.8
million so far during its domestic theatrical run, which makes it a hit and of
course it is part of the Marvel universe, so why not park it after Incredibles
2 … on Nov. 20 (closer to the Christmas-selling season)!?!
There could be legitimate
reasons for the sudden announcement.
Perhaps there were sign-off issues that delayed the official press release
(with unofficial sales solicitation already in the works)… or Disney felt
pressure related to piracy issues … or maybe they saw an open week (nobody has
anything on Oct. 16 that has grossed over $25 million) and decided to just jump
in and take it.
At the end of the day it
probably won’t make a difference as this three-SKU home entertainment launch
(plus Best Buy and Target exclusive editions) will do just fine when it reaches
retail outlets on Oct. 16. Planned for
release are DVD and Blu-ray editions, plus a 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack.
Bonus features include an
introduction by director Peyton Reed (Ant-Man, The Break-Up, Bring it On),
a gag reel, outtakes, deleted scenes (with Reed commentary) and a quartet of
featurettes — “Back in the Ant Suit,” “A Suit of Her Own: The Wasp,” “Subatomic
Super Heroes: Hank & Janet” and “Quantum Perspective: The VFX and
Production Design of Ant-Man and The Wasp.”
