Arrow Video, with domestic sales and distribution
support provided by MVD Entertainment Group, will be revisiting writer/director
Clive Barker’s 1987 cult horror gem Hellraiser — as
well as his 1988 follow-up, Hellbound: Hellraiser II
(produced by, with direction by Tony Randel) — on Sept. 24 with new 2K
restorations (approved by the director of photography, Robin Vidgeon).
These new Blu-ray editions come jammed with bonus
treasures! So let’s get to it.
Beginning with Hellraiser, we
find not one, but two commentary options.
The first features writer/director Clive Barker, while the second teams
Barker with actress Ashley Laurence (Kirsty Cotton).
Documentary filmmaker Kevin McDonagh’s Leviathan:
The Story of Hellraiser (brand new version) is
included here, plus there are four production featurettes — “Being Frank: Sean
Chapman on Hellraiser,” “Soundtrack Hell: The Story of the Abandoned Coil Score,”
“Hellraiser: Resurrection” and “Under the Skin: Doug Bradley on Hellraiser.”
Moving on to the sequel, Hellbound:
Hellraiser II, we also have two commentary
options. Director Tony Randel is joined
by screenwriter Peter Atkins for the first one, while the second commentary
teams Ashley Laurence with Atkins and Randel.
A new version of McDonagh’s Leviathan:
The Story of Hellraiser (which originally ran
just a tick under eight hours) is included here with the segments that focused
on Hellbound: Hellraiser II,
plus there are three featurettes — “Being Frank: Sean Chapman on Hellbound,” “Lost
in the Labyrinth” and “Under the Skin: Doug Bradley on Hellbound: Hellraiser II”
— the excised scene known as “Surgeon,” behind the scenes footage, and onset
video sessions with Clive Barker as well as the cast and crew.
