Bayview Entertainment looks to Apr. 14 as the street
date for the DVD debut of director Dan Levy Dagerman’s misdirection romantic
comedy, The Best People.
For all the world, this looks like another one of
those Bridesmaid
re-dos — and certainly it does have its wedding disaster moments — but The Best
People is a whole lot more than just your typical
RomCom. It’s about loss, coming to
terms with grief and love … and yes, comedy too.
Anna (Anna Evelyn Joy; aka Anna Lieberman — her
feature film debut after a series of short films and episodic television
appearances) and Claire (Claire Donald — The Riot
Act, Parker’s Anchor) are sisters who have struggled
of late after the loss of their mother.
Anna, more so than Claire.
The crisis arrives when Claire suddenly springs on
her sister that after a whirlwind romance she is getting married to Johnny (Johnny
Cannizzaro — Jersey Boys),
who seems like a nice guy, but this news gives Anna fits (her behavior is
always edgy and borderline crude).
She is having none of it and finds an unlikely ally
in Johnny’s best friend, Art (Arthur Napiontek — Pineapple
Express, Wrong Swipe), who also thinks that the
proposed wedding is a hasty decision.
What makes The Best
People work so well is the performance of Anna
Evelyn Joy, who never does what you would expect her to do in what starts out
as a routine “let’s mess up this wedding” comedy. She not only plays beautifully off her
love-hate relationship with Art, which becomes more love than hate as the
storyline progresses, but lets her stream of consciousness emotions run the
gamut from let’s destroy this wedding to I love my sister so much … she’s
great.
Come for the comedy, come for the relationships, but
certainly put The Best People on
your Apr. 14 viewing calendar for the performance of Anna Evelyn Joy … she
should definitely have copies of this DVD on hand and ready to ship off to
casting agents and producers, they are going to love it!
