It was curious to note that everyone seemed be
steering clear of the street-date Tuesday that falls on March 31. The reason was revealed on Wednesday
morning, Feb. 19 when Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment made it official
(as if everyone didn’t already know) that director J.J. Abrams’ Star
Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will be available as a
multi-SKU product offering on that date.
For the record, the ARR works out to 102 days and
the domestic box office take, despite all of the grumbling about how the
nine-episode saga finally ended, was a massive $513.2 million … and as much
overseas, making this a billion dollar box office hit.
As to SKU configuration, there will be a 4K Ultra
HD/2 Blu-ray Combo Pack presentation, a single-disc Blu-ray buying option (no
DVD companion) and a stand-alone DVD edition.
Plus, the usual Target and Best Buy “exclusive editions” … and a massive
complete collection featuring 4K Ultra HD copies of each film in the series (which
means that all of the Star Wars
films not previously released on 4K Ultra HD will also be available on Mar. 31).
As to bonus features, there is the feature-length
“documentary” titled The Skywalker Legacy, but
there are no credits at this time to identify the documentary filmmaker — or
filmmakers — responsible for the production.
There are also five featurettes — “Pasaana Pursuit: Creating the Speeder
Chase,” “Aliens in the Desert,” “D-O: Key to the Past” and “Cast of Creatures”
— but no commentary options.
