Vinegar Syndrome To Deliver Blu-ray Editions Of Alien From L.A. And Surf II On July 27

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

Vinegar Syndrome will be re-introducing director Albert Pyun’s 1988 bizarre adventure tale, Alien from L.A., starring Sports Illustrated's cover girl, Kathy Ireland (in her film debut … Journey to the Center of the Earth, Side Out, Necessary Roughness, etc.) on July 27.

This is a new 2K film restoration from the film’s interpositive.   It will be available on Blu-ray and includes two vintage featurettes — “Making a Fairytale” and “Putting the Puzzle Together” — plus the short video session with co-star Linda Kerridge … which is a nice segue to the other Blu-ray release from Vinegar Syndrome that streets on July 27.

This would be the double-disc Blu-ray release of writer/director Randall M. Badat’s 1984 “eccentric” comedy, Surf II (which is a tip-off right there, since there was no Surf I).

Surf II on Blu-ray is a new 2K restoration from archival prints (note, plural, prints) and the segue from Alien from L.A. to Surf II is that Linda Kerridge, who gained instant cult status for her “Marilyn Monroe” performance in writer/director Vernon Zimmerman’s 1980 film release of Fade to Black, made this film and few others (Down Twisted, Mixed Blood, Vicious Lips, etc.) and then finished off her film career with the aforementioned Alien from L.A. (retiring to her home country of Australia).

What we have here are two different versions of Badat’s film.   The theatrical release and a thought-to-be-lost Director’s Cut, with both versions containing two commentary options each.

On the theatrical cut, you have filmmaker Randall M. Badat providing commentary, with the second option featuring film historians Zach Carlson and Bryan Connolly (“Destroy All Movies”) … on the Director’s Cut, Badat delivers a different commentary and the alternative commentary option features actor Eddie Deezen (as Menlo Schwartzer in Surf II).

Other bonus goodies include the feature-length documentary titled The Stupidest Movie Ever Made: Drinking The Drink Of Surf II, a behind-the-scenes still gallery and an extensive “sizzle reel.”
