Bayview Entertainment has locked into May 31 as the street date for both Blu-ray and DVD editions of writer/director Mario Van Peebles’ film adaptation of former Navy flyer Randy Arrington’s 2007 novel, “Kerosene Cowboys: Manning the Spare,” which was shortened to Red Sky.
Let’s start with Van Peebles himself, who plays the villain of the piece, Jason Cutter, a CIA scum who is up to something nasty, but with plenty of miss-direction that keeps us guessing as to his real motivations right up to the end. Politics? Weapons of a chemical nature? Financial markets being manipulated? All of the above? Sounds like the CIA these days in so many ways.
In something of a prologue, it is the Iraq war and fighter pilots Butch Masters, whose call-sign is “Cobra” (Cam Gigandet — Burlesque, Twilight, Never Back Down), and Tom Craig, call-sign “Rodeo” (Shane West — A Walk to Remember, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen … as Ray Barnett on the ER TV series), are given orders to take out an Iraqi chemical facility.
They fly in, wipe it out and only in the aftermath do they find that it was a set-up. No real orders for the mission … they had gone rogue. Jason Cutter, as it turns out, used the attack to try and kill inspectors who have discovered the dreaded “Rainmaker” bio-weapon. They manage to escape the raid, but a U.S. soldier acting as a bodyguard was not so lucky … Cobra and Rodeo are brought up on charges!!
Disgraced, they are forced to resign “voluntarily” or face a court martial that could land them in prison for years.
We skip ahead seven years and Rodeo’s former fiancée, Karen (Rachael Leigh Cook — Josie and the Pussycats, She’s All That, The Big Empty), has become an investigative journalist and who might be on to a big story that circles all the way back to the “Rainmaker” raid. In a round-about-way, both Rodeo and Cobra are given a chance to redeem themselves and clear their names if they agree to go on a secret mission. It seems the bio-weapon wasn’t destroyed after all and its actual use is not what you would think … it eats oil!!
Can they succeed this time? Maybe, but Cutter has his hand in the mix. And what’s this, they have to fly with a Russian pilot (played by Maria Guzeeva) to take out the “Rainmaker.” What could possibly go wrong? Oh, and do Rodeo and Karen get back together, or does she capture the heart of another pilot? And what of Jason Cutter … justice for him?
May 31, all the “Top Gun” action you can handle with the Blu-ray and DVD release of Red Sky from Bayview Entertainment.
