Bayview Entertainment has tabbed Apr. 26 as the DVD debut date for Canadian filmmaker Tim McKort’s cross between sci-fi and geopolitics, Spearphising, starring Alex Gallant (Risen, The Project) as Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer Colt Hanson, whose rural patrol area becomes the hot spot of a Russian hi-tech espionage operation.
Writer/director Tim McKort made a name for himself — and a full-blown film franchise as well — with his Sure Shot Dombrowski series of films, but after six in the series he thought it was time to branch out a bit.
He wrote and directed a sci-fi thriller set in New York City (Q4: Dream Corporation) and now Spearphising, which was filmed in the remote Whitecourt and Woodlands area in Alberta, Canada, a seemingly unlikely place for Russian agents to set up a cyber operation to influence the upcoming Canadian elections.
Here we find Hanson, a city boy who has asked for duty in this remote area to put his experiences in Afghanistan behind him. A slower pace, more private and restful … a place to be productive and at the same time, to heal emotionally.
It is precisely the sort of “middle-of-nowhere” place that a group of Russian cyber-terrorists, who are in the “oil business” (as their cover), have decided to set-up shop. A place they can operate where no one will notice. Suddenly our RCMP hero finds himself up against some really nasty people who are hell-bent in installing their own candidate in power — outmatched and out-gunned he has to find it within himself to take this threat down.
McKort’s Spearphising couldn’t be better-timed … in light of what the Russians are up to at the moment. Apr. 26, on DVD from Bayview Entertainment.
