Bubba is back!!   And VCI Entertainment has the good news on this … more on that in a moment.

Back in 1981, J.D. Feigelson, who saw his 1973 script for Horror High, directed by Larry N. Stouffer, turned into a successful theatrical release (through Crown International Pictures), had visions that his script for Dark Night of the Scarecrow also being exhibited theatrically on the silver screen.

That didn’t happen, instead CBS took his script, with little, if any changes, and made it a television movie.   Dark Night of the Scarecrow, in time, was acknowledged to be one of the best made-for-TV genre films ever produced.

The story is a creepy gem.   Bubba (played by Larry Drake) is something of a simpleton, who befriends a young girl by the name of Marylee (Tonya Crowe — perhaps best known as Olivia on the Knots Landing television series), which upsets certain citizens of the rural township where both Bubba and Marylee live.

When Marylee is mauled by a dog, Bubba comes to her rescue, but these same upright citizens think that Bubba attacked her and they plan on delivering some homestyle justice.   Bubba’s mother cleverly hides her son from this vigilante mob in plain sight as a scarecrow in the cornfield, but they find him anyway and execute him.   It didn’t matter that he turned out to be a hero, the deed was done and they needed to cover it up.

Soon, one by one the evil-doers are dispatched by a mysterious scarecrow, who once again comes to the rescue of Marylee in the suspense-filled finale.

Years have gone by.   Decades.   Now word arrived this past week from VCI Entertainment that J.D. Feigelson’s much-anticipated sequel, Dark Night of the Scarecrow 2, will be making its Blu-ray and DVD debut on May 10.

Hilda Corvis (Carol Dines) is Bubba’s cousin and she continues to honor his memory by visiting his grave on a continuing basis.   Into her little rural world comes Chris Ryhmer (Amber Wedding) and her son Jeremy (Aiden Shurr) and are soon befriended by their neighbor, Hilda.

Soon, strange deaths — perhaps “farming accidents” — begin happening and Chris become curious about the history of the scarecrow and Bubba.   Could he be back?   Or is there something else going on?   To find out, May 10, Dark Night of the Scarecrow 2 from VCI Entertainment on either Blu-ray or DVD.
