Writer/Director Steve Kloves' The Fabulous Baker Boys Gets Rewind Status From MVD Entertainment Group On June 07

MVD Entertainment Group announced this past week that its latest inductee into its popular line of Blu-ray products, the “Rewind Collection, is none other than writer/director Steve Kloves’ 1989 adult-themed comedy, The Fabulous Baker Boys, starring brother Jeff and Beau Bridges, along with the sultry Michelle Pfeiffer.

The street date will be June 7.

The film itself got off to a rocky start by being bounced from studio to studio, first at Warner Bros., then at MGM and finally the production ended up at 20th Century-Fox.   At first filmmaker Steve Kloves, who has made something of a career adapting the “Harry Potter” books to the screen (all eight bear his signature), was, according to trade press accounts at the time, reluctant to cast brothers as brothers, but once he interviewed Beau Bridges, after having already cast Jeff Bridges, the deal was done, perfect.

Michelle Pfeiffer came onboard as Susie  Diamond, the hooker-turned-singer, who becomes the object of Jeff Bridges’ affections.   It might come as a surprise to some, but Pfeiffer does all of her own signing — she spent close to two months preparing for the role.   Her hard work paid off with an Oscar nomination for Best Actress (she would also be nominated in the same category for her performance in Love Field in 1992 and for Best Supporting Actress in Dangerous Liaisons).

Various Los Angeles venues doubled for Seattle in this tale of two brothers — “The Fabulous Baker Boys” — who are a long-time lounge and small venue duo, who decide to spice up their act with a singer.   And spice it up they do!!

Bonus goodies include two commentary options, one with filmmaker Steve Kloves (hosted by Julie Kirgo and Nick Redman of Twilight Time) and the second with director of photography Michael Ballhaus, who was Oscar-nominated for Best Cinematography (also nominated for Gangs of New York and Broadcast News).

There are over 20-minutes worth of deleted scenes and a trio of featurettes — “The Fabulous Baker Boys,” “Jeff Bridges & Beau Bridges” and “Michelle Pfeiffer.”
