If you want moody, turn-of-the-screw chillers, then look no further than these two new cinematic delights on Blu-ray from Bayview Entertainment that will be heading home on Mar. 28.
Suspenseful, attention-grabbing and mind-game thrillers is exactly what is in store for you with director Kevin Pontuti’s film adaptation of the Charlotte Perkins Gilman short story, The Yellow Wallpaper, as well as writer/director Claire Oakley’s Make Up.
Let’s start with The Yellow Wallpaper, which is based on Gilman’s 1892 short story of the same name, starring Alexandra Loreth (her feature film debut) as Jane, a young woman with, as Gilman described it, “a slight hysterical tendency.” She has been taken to the country by her husband, John (Joe Mullins — Property of the State, Ann, In View), a physician, to get plenty of rest and fresh air.
Having recently given birth, Jane is suffering from what could be described as a heavy case of postpartum depression … but, maybe not. In any case, she is isolated in a single room in the “vacation” house, which is unique in that it is decorated with a hideous yellow patterned wallpaper.
Since she is forbidden to do anything, except rest and stay within the confines of the room — with the yellow wallpaper — it is only a matter of time before she begins to focus on the patterns to occupy her mind. With such limitations, with such rules and with a depressed and yet active mind, if one sets out to drive someone off their rocker, this would be the perfect set-up.
Tick-tock, tick-tock … the suspense grows, Jane’s mind goes into overdrive … and snap. The Yellow Wallpaper on Blu-ray from Bayview Entertainment, a tale of madness told one tick-tock at a time.
Also arriving on Blu-ray on Mar. 28 is writer/director Claire Oakley’s Make Up, starring Molly Windsor (The Runaways, She Said) as Ruth, an attractive 18-year-old, who has been in a boyfriend/girlfriend relationship with her classmate, Tom (Joseph Quinn) going on three years.
He’s got a summer gig at a vacation resort in Cornwall, so she decides to spend some time with him and surprises him one evening. Bliss. Ruth has her “man” and now she can settle in for a lifetime of … except for little thing. She finds his shirt with lipstick on it.
Imagine an eighteen-year-old girl/woman, who knows nothing of the world, has no skill-sets, but is fixated on a dream. Tom has been unfaithful. There are penalties for such behavior and she has all the time in the world, in Cornwall, during the summer, to “deal” with it. Ruth has in on a mission … to discover the lipstick offender and take care of business!
In Oakley’s Make Up, you have to settle in for the end-game. The tension mounts, the betrayal will be “handled” and Molly Windsor delivers a performance that you will not soon forget. Mar. 28 … on Blu-ray.
