Synergetic Distribution, with sales and distribution expertise provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has selected Mar. 14 for the DVD debut of writer/director Takahide Hori’s futuristic sci-fi tale, Junk Head.
How does one describe a film that is really more of an art form than a traditional narrative, although there is plenty of that as well. Hori’s presentation is a visual feast. We should add that it is a stop-motion animated visual feast that blends so many different styles — cinematic touchstones — so that it is like watching a fireworks extravaganza on a summer’s night … plenty of oohs and aahs.
It also has plenty of skin-crawling moments.
Junk Head originally surfaced in 2014 (after four years in the making) as a short-film that ran about 30-minutes. Takahide Hori literally learned the craft of stop-motion animation by doing all of the work for his short film — he had a real job, so this was a passion that consumed the remainder of his waking hours. The feedback was good; even great.
He went back to work and extended Junk Head into a feature-length film and it resurfaced on the festival circuit in 2017. It was further refined and arrived back at the Fantasia International Film Festival in August of 2021 (the film’s second trip). For the balance of 2021 — and well into 2022 — Hori’s masterpiece worked the festival circuit … now, finally, it is available on DVD from Synergetic Distribution.
So, what’s all the buzz? What is Junk Head?
In the future, more than a thousand years from now, the human population has worked itself into a corner and now faces extinction. The only solution is to send one of their own, a robotic cyborg; a junker — who looks like a cute little toy robot — into the underworld where clones revolted centuries ago and established their own domain. This is the world of the Marigans.
They, the Marigans, have mutated into various forms. Think: H.R. Giger as many of the creatures in the Mariganian underworld have a “Gigerest” feel to them.
Our little junker robot must enter this world, survive the mutated monsters and retrieve genetic material that can reignite the human race. If it fails … that’s the end.
This is one adventure that you have to see for yourself.
