Radiance Films Unearths Director Rudolf Thome's Red Sun For A Blu-ray Debut On June 20

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

Lost?   Forgotten?   Not if Radiance Films, with domestic sales and distribution support provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has anything to do with it.

Word arrived this past week that director Rudolf Thome’s 1970 film release of Red Sun — which, to the best of our knowledge never saw the light of day in the United States, either as an arthouse release or on DVD — will be available as a Blu-ray product offering on June 20.

It is well-documented that Thome made shorts and films quickly around this period (Detektive, Fremde Stradt, etc.) and then got into some financial difficulties.   Perhaps that explains the lack of distribution for Red Sun.

Regardless, June 20 sees its domestic debut and as a Blu-ray no less.

The story, which is certainly unique for its time, has our protagonist, Thomas (Marquard Bohm — Paradiso - Sieben Tage mit Sieben Frauen, Fox and His Friends, Belin Alexanderplatz, Supergirl), hitchhiking to Munich to hook up with his ex-girlfriend, Peggy (Uschi Obermaier — Detektive, Haytabo), thinking that they might get back together.

He soon discovers that she has not one or two, but four lovely roommates.   Broke and on the road with no particular place to go, has his bad luck turned around with such a set-up?

Perhaps.  But what the hapless Thomas doesn’t know is that these women have made a pact; a pledge that no sane person could imagine.  His mere presence with Peggy has started the clock ticking … a wicked fate awaits the longer he stays in this paradise!!

Bonus goodies included selected scene commentary with director Rudolf Thome, who is joined by Kommune 1 member Rainer Langhans, the feature-length documentary title From Oberhausen to the Fall of the Wall and the featurette titled Rote Sonne: Between Pop Sensibility and Social Critique.
