Shout! Studios has tabbed Dec. 19 as the street date for a 4K Ultra HD collector’s edition boxed set of writ.er/director Oliver Stone’s 1991 deep dive into the assassination of president John F. Kennedy, JFK.
In light of Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. plans of running for president in 2024, and his public statements about the CIA being involved in his uncle’s assassination, the timing for a 4K Ultra HD (along with three Blu-ray discs) release of JFK could not possibly be better.
The film received eight Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director for Oliver Stone (his third, winning for both Born on the Fourth of July and Platoon), but only managed technical wins in the Editing and Cinematography categories.
So what do we have here from Shout! Studios? The 4K Ultra HD disc showcases the Director’s Cut of the film, which clocks in at 205 minutes, and includes commentary by Oliver Stone.
The first Blu-ray disc is the same configuration, Director’s Cut with commentary, while the second Blu-ray disc is the 188 minute theatrical cut of the film.
The third companion Blu-ray disc in the box set is loaded with newly prepared bonus features. We begin with six new featurettes — “The Delicate Hands of Time,” “One Person Can Make a Difference,” “Stone Bold,” “Brave New Worlds,” “Supporting the Vision” and “Re-Creating the Unthinkable” — two vintage featurettes — “Assassination Update” and “Meet Mr. X: The Personality and Thoughts of Fletcher Prouty” — 12 deleted and extended scenes, plus an alternate ending with optional commentary by Stone.
Also on the 4K Ultra HD release front from Shout! Studios is the seemingly timeless whodunit, writer/director Jonathan Lynn’s 1985 mystery/comedy Clue (with co-writing by none other than John Landis), which will be getting a 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack release on Dec. 12.
It took five long years, a couple of studio changes, cast changes and more (ah, the magic of filmmaking) to bring the film to the screen. And what a hoot — four different endings were filmed to keep the cast guessing and for it to remain something of a “mystery” for the film-going public. Three of these endings made it to the screen, and depending on which theatre you went to during the Christmas season of 1985 you got a different outcome (that was unique).
What’s included here?
The 4K Ultra HD disc includes all three of the “surprise” endings. The companion Blu-ray includes the film, the three endings and three newly-prepared featurettes — “The Perfect Motive: Directing Clue,” “The Scene of the Crime: Producing Clue” and “Not Just a Game: Scoring Clue.”
