Universal Pictures Home Entertainment is moving quickly to clear its current slate of theatrical releases with December dates being assigned to get them out and in consumer hands before the New Year.
We start with director Emma Tammi’s Five Nights at Freddy’s, which will be making the transition from theatrical venues to the physical media marketplace on Dec. 12 with a full-spread of consumer buying options.
The ARR is an ultra-swift 46 days. Box office receipts currently stand at $132.7 million.
This is a record … no film released since the launch of the DVD format in 1997 — that has grossed in excess of $100 million at the box office — has made the move from your local multiplex to the home entertainment arena in just 46 days.
The previous record was 60 days, held by both A Quiet Place, Part II and Free Guy (both in 2021).
Planned for release on Dec. 12 are Combo Pack editions for both the 4K Ultra HD (with Blu-ray) and Blu-ray (with DVD) formats, plus a stand-alone DVD purchasing option.
Bonus nuggets are three featurettes — “Five Nights at Freddy’s: From Game to Screen,” “Killer Animatronics” and “Five Nights in Three Dimensions.”
Arriving the following week, Dec. 19, is director David Gordon Green’s The Exorcist: The Believer. This too will be a full-spread physical media release package.
The ARR works out to 74 days … the domestic box office take was $65.5 million.
As with Five Nights at Freddy’s, the same release configurations will be in play for The Exorcist: The Believer.
Bonus features begin with commentary from director (co-writer) David Gordon Green, who is joined by his co-writer Peter Sattler, executive producer Ryan Turek and F/X whiz Christopher Nelson.
There are also a half-dozen production featurettes — “Making a Believer,” “Ellen and Linda: Reunited,” “Stages of Posession,” “The Opening,” “Editing an Exorcism” and “Matters of Faith.”
