Severin Films, with sales and distribution support provided by MVD Entertainment Group, will be crushing it with four new 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack releases on May 28. You heard that right, four!!
So what do we have here? How about — it’s a tough choice picking one to start with — we begin with writer/director Eddy Matalon’s 1977 (1980, United States) horror entry, Cathy’s Curse.
This Canadian production was bicycled (meaning: limited prints) across Canada from July through November of 1977 and then dropped out of sight. It finally got domestic distribution three years later, but the film was trimmed by some three minutes.
A new 4K restoration of the recently discovered original 35mm camera negatives gives genre fans the choice on May 28 of enjoying the “director’s cut” (91 minutes) or default to the theatrical release cut (88 minutes).
Bonus features include commentary by Brian Collins and Simon Barrett, a trio of featurettes — “Tricks And Treats,” “Cathy’s Daddy” and “Cathy & Mum” — and more.
Next comes director William Asher’s 1981 genre entry, Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker, starring Jimmy McNichol who lives with the “mother” (Susan Tyrrell — Cry-Baby, Forbidden Zone) from hell, who guards some deeply disturbed “family” secrets (a deadly passion).
As with the Canadian release of Cathy’s Curse, Asher’s Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker had a limited number of prints and took from November of 1981 until March of 1982 to complete its domestic theatrical run. And yet, for all of that, here it is as a 4K Ultra HD release from Severin Films!!Bonus features include three commentary options. The first with McNichol (Smokey Bites the Dust), while the second commentary option teams co-writers Steve Breimer and Alan Jay Glueckman, with moderation by Mondo Digital’s Nathaniel Thompson, and the third is with co-producer Eugene Mazzola.
Other bonus goodies include video sessions with McNichol, Tyrrell, make-up artist Allan A. Apone and producer Steve Breimer and two featurettes — “Extreme Prejudice” and “Point and Shoot.”
Rounding out the new 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack arrivals on May 28 are Lucio Fulci’s The Devil's Honey (4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack) and director Sergio Martino’s The Great Alligator (4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack) … both have English and Italian audio tracks.
