We are off to see the wizard on Nov. 5 with the 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack release of The Wizard of Oz from Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment. This will mark the 85th anniversary of the film’s theatrical release in 1939.
I had the very good fortune of being the head of marketing at MGM when the 50th anniversary was celebrated in 1989 … all the stops were pulled out to make it the most successful VHS sell-thru campaign (at the time), so it is always something special when this classic celebrates another milestone.
The 4K Ultra HD disc is a movie-only presentation, with the companion Blu-ray disc showcasing the archived bonus features. These include four deleted/behind the scenes segments and two featurettes — “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz: The Making of a Movie Classic” and “Prettier than Ever: The Restoration of Oz.”
In other release news from Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment, writer/director M. Night Shyamalan’s latest, Trap, starring Josh Hartnett as “The Butcher” (a serial killer), will also be available on Nov. 5 as a full-spread physical media array of product offerings — stand-alone DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD purchasing selections.
The ARR comes in at 95 days and the domestic box office tally currently stands at $35.3 million.
A premium VOD window opened on Aug. 30 (28 days into the film’s theatrical run), which gives the “helper” community just shy of ten weeks to move knock-off Blu-ray copies to unsuspecting genre fans.
Bonus goodies, which are exclusive to the Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD SKUs, include deleted scenes, an extended concert scene (“Where Did She Go”) and five production featurettes — “Setting the Trap: A New M. Night Shayamalan Experience,” “Saleka as Lady Raven,” “Cooper Gets Stopped by SWAT,” “Riley Shows Lady Raven Her Room” and “Cooper Takes a Hostage and Slips Away.”
