Arrow Video, with domestic sales and distribution expertise provided by MVD Entertainment Group, will be giving director Renny Harlin’s 1999 “haunted house” terror hit, Deep Blue Sea, the 4K Ultra HD treatment (4K restoration from the original camera negative) on Mar. 18 with the release of both 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray purchasing options.
Wait, wait, wait just a minute!! Deep Blue Sea a “haunted house” genre flick?
Isn’t this a creature feature?
Sure. It can be both … but we lean toward the “haunted house” thriller aspect … and here’s why!
First, it has a victim’s pool, including the likes of Samuel L. Jackson, Saffron Burrows, LL Cool J, Thomas Jane, Michael Rapaport, Stellan Skarsgard, Aida Turturro and Jacqueline McKenzie (is there a “final girl” among that lot?).
Next, it has an isolated location — it doesn’t have to be a real haunted house or haunted mansion to be a “haunted house” horror tale. A cabin in the woods, an abandon psychiatric facility, or in this case, a floating research platform in the middle of the ocean will all work just fine.
And finally there has to be a “killer” that is working his, her or its way through the “victim pool.” Slasher, serial killer or, in the case of Deep Blue Sea, super-smart sharks that are gaining access to the floating lab by sinking it level by level and picking off members of the research team as they proceed with their diabolical shark plan.
Bonus goodies include not one, but three commentary options. The first is an archival commentary featuring filmmaker Renny Harlin and actor Samuel L. Jackson. The next two are newly-minted — screenwriter Duncan Kennedy and film critic Rebekah McKendry are your two choices.
Additional bonus features include, deleted scenes (with commentary by Harlan), the archival featurette titled “When Sharks Attack: The Making of Deep Blue Sea” and two newly-prepared featurettes — “From the Frying Pan … Into the Studio Tank” and “Beneath the Surface.”
