Bayview Entertainment Tabs Nov. 26 For The DVD Debut Of Documentary Filmmaker Joe Clark's Headstrong

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Bayview Entertainment enters the home entertainment arena on Nov. 26 with the DVD debut of documentary filmmaker Joe Clark’s game-changing film, Headstrong, about the life and times of WWE headliner, Rob Van Dam … or just RVD to his legion of fans.

After ten years of wrestling in various indie circles, Van Dam joined the WWF (soon to be the WWE) and won the WWF Hardcore Championship, lost it, won it back … and would go on to win the WWE Championship.

Clark’s film picks up Van Dam as he transitions to a new career — yes, he did take up acting beginning in 1995 and play Stanley in director Christopher Ray’s 2015 film, 3-Headed Shark Attack — which is that of a stand-up comedian.   As he works this new circuit, health issues arise from his wrestling days and RVD undergoes some medical tests for his frequent headaches and vision issues.

Because of his star-status, the WWE takes notice and as a direct result of his health scare institutes new safety policies.   In the end, it is a win-win for RVD as he is able to work through the pain and manage a full recovery.

The film blends vintage RVD matches with his comedy bits and includes interviews with the likes of Monique Dupree, Tom Garland, Tommy Dreamer, Kevin Nash, Vickie Guerrero, Mick Foley and more.

Oscilloscope Laboratories Launches Line Of Cinema Books

Oscilloscope Gets Scholastic, Set to Release Three New, Limited-Edition Books

Oscilloscope Laboratories will expand into the publishing realm with the release of three new titles: MUSINGS (Volumes 1 & 2) and Jason Tippet’s HEADING TO BILL’S FOR CIGARETTES. The books will be released by O-Scope ahead of the upcoming holiday season.

MUSINGS features original, independent, quality film writing from esteemed journalists such as Scott Tobias (NPR, The Dissolve, The Onion), Alison Nastasi (Flavorwire, MTV, Pitchfork), Judy Berman (Time, New York Times, Washington Post), Mike D’Angelo (The A.V. Club, Nerve), Keith Phipps (Slate, The Atlantic, Vulture), and Bilge Ebiri (New York Times, New York Magazine, Village Voice) just to name a few.

Writers who contributed to MUSINGS were tasked with delving into neglected corners of cinema they were eager to illuminate, highlighting the films, filmmakers, and movements that don't always get much attention in mainstream publications. The pieces sampled in the MUSINGS anthologies are full of insight and scholarship, ranging from pocket histories to artist profiles to deep dives into particular films. It’s that kind of writing—thoughtful, evocative, and, most of all, full of passion—that brings this collection to life.

Says MUSINGS editor Scott Tobias, "MUSINGS has given me an opportunity to reach out to some of the best film writers around. This anthology reflects their individual passions and obsessions, and I'm proud to have given them the space to do their best work."

O-Scope is also pleased to simultaneously release HEADING TO BILL’S FOR CIGARETTES, the first book from the award-winning filmmaker Jason Tippet. O-Scope previously released Tippet’s feature film ONLY THE YOUNG (co-directed with Elizabeth Mims). HEADING TO BILL’S is a beautiful collection of Tippet’s 35mm photographs; an ode to the quirky characters of Atwater Village in East Los Angeles. (Not coincidentally, O-Scope is the company founded by Adam Yauch, MCA of Beastie Boys, who as a group were early adopters of the Atwater neighborhood.

It’s there that they first met their long time collaborator Mark “Money Mark” Nishita, who provides the book’s introduction here.) Tippet could accurately be described as a sort of William Eggleston for the Instagram generation: from a fed-up dude hurling a Big Gulp at a Tesla parked on Glendale Boulevard to the unique soul playing the melodica in his driver’s-seat-cum-rehearsal-space, Tippet’s photos document the surreal, everyday happenings that permeate the neighborhood he calls home.

“I always get caught up with unique situations, and I’m attracted to them, I have such a strong love for underdogs,” says Tippet. "I appreciate people that struggle, they’re more interesting to me, and it’s a type of person I’m drawn to photograph. Most of the subjects here are people I see all the time around the neighborhood. They’re like local celebrities to me. I hope when readers flip through the book they have a connection to these people and the neighborhood and get a feeling of what it’s like to spend a day here.”

About the releases, O-Scope president Dan Berger said, “As anyone in the independent film business knows, we’re operating in a time of constant change and uncertainty and it felt like an opportune moment for us to shore up our financials with a tried-and-true cash windfall, so we published a few physical books.”

MUSINGS VOLUMES 1 & 2 and HEADING TO BILL’S FOR CIGARETTES will be available in limited edition starting in November via Oscilloscope’s online store as well as at select bookstores nationwide. The releases will also be supported by events in local markets. For more information please reach out to O-Scope’s books publicist, Liz Lagno (liz@oscilloscope.net).

Vinegar Syndrome Preps 4K Ultra HD Release Of Tammy And The T-Rex For Delivery On Friday Nov. 29

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
In the waning days of VHS, indie Imperial Entertainment took to market during the December Christmas Holiday crush of 1994 a bizarre mixed-genre film from director Stewart Raffill — the same director who had delivered the indie smash sci-fi hit, The Philadelphia Experiment, ten years earlier.   The film was titled Tammy and the T-Rex and it came and went in the blink of an eye.

The star of the film hit it big three years later with director Paul Verhoeven’s Starship Troopers and director John McNaughton’s Wild Things.   Of course, this is Denise Richards (and it was her first “starring” role … after some TV episodic work and a couple of bit parts), who stars as a high school cheerleader who is in love with a T-Rex … but it gets better.

Opposite her is none other than Paul Walker (Pleasantville, Varsity Blues and The Fast and the Furious were all soon to follow) as her high school sweetheart, who is killed by a jealous rival, but has his brain transplanted into a dinosaur (seriously) by a mad scientist (Terry Kiser — best known as Bernie Lomax in the Weekend at Bernie's movies).

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
News arrived this past week that Vinegar Syndrome has unearthed this lost film classic and has a new 4K restoration on the way from the 35mm original camera negative on Friday, Nov. 29.   And get this, it will be their first 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack product offering … that’s right, a 4K Ultra HD edition of Tammy and the T-Rex.   A Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack will also be available.

Genre fans will have two viewing options.   The heavily-edited “PG-13” version and available for the first time an uncut presentation of the film — extra gore and more!!!

Bonus features include commentary from director Stewart Raffill, who is joined by producer Diane Kirman (aka: Mrs. Stewart Raffill) and four featurettes — “Blood, Brains and a Teenage T-Rex,” “A Blast from the Past,” “Having the Guts” and “A Testicular Stand-Off.”

Warner Bros. Home Entertaiment's Goldfinch Flies Home On Dec. 03

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Warner Bros. Home Entertainment looks to Dec. 3 as the release date for both DVD and Blu-ray editions of director John Crowley’s film adaptation of Donna Tartt’s 2013 Pulitzer Prize winning novel, The Goldfinch.

The ARR is a very-fast-to-market 81 days (do in part to the studio’s blockbuster hits, It: Chapter 2 and The Joker, also needing street dates in December) and ticket sales were a lackluster $5.3 million.

As to bonus goodies, common to both the DVD and Blu-ray SKUs is the featurette titled “The Real Goldfinch.”   Exclusive to the Blu-ray edition is the additional featurette titled “The Goldfinch Unbound” and 16 minutes worth of deleted scenes with commentary by director John Crowley.

Undercrank Productions Restores Marion Davies' Little Old New York For DVD Release On Nov. 19

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

The comedy talents of the legendary Marion Davies will be showcased this coming Nov. 19 by Ben Model’s Undercrank Productions with news this past week that a 2K film restoration (from the 35mm nitrate print) of her 1923 box office smash, Little Old New York, will be available for cinephiles to enjoy on DVD.

This elaborate production included William Randolph Hearst, the producer of the film, building an exact replica of Robert Fulton’s 1807 steamboat, The Clermont, which serviced the river ports of New York on an exclusive basis for a 20-year period.   So “modern” was the vessel that it could travel from Albany to New York City at a sustained speed of 4 miles per hour, navigating the distance — in luxury — in roughly 30 hours.

Elaborate sets were built for the film (literally no expense was spared for Marion Davies), however disaster struck about two-thirds the way through production when Hearst’s Cosmopolitan-International Studio in New York City burned to the ground.   Fortunately, the negatives were saved and production continued — with new sets — at various studios throughout the city.

Here we are introduced to the aforementioned Robert Fulton (Courtenay Foote — Tess of the D'Urbervilles, His Parisian Wife), who has teamed up with Cornelius Vanderbilt (Sam Hardy — as Charles Weston in King Kong), to find financing for his envisioned steamboat and as luck would have it they have found a backer in the form of Larry Delavan (Harrison Ford), who is about to inherit a large fortune.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
But a monkey wrench is thrown into the works when a rival heir is announced, an Irish teenager by the name of Patrick O’Day.   The kid has actually a better claim, but there’s one problem, he’s dead.   Enter his sister, Patricia (Marion Davies), who assumes the role of her dead brother and travels to America to claim the inheritance.

To complicate matters further — this is a comedy, not a drama — Delavan takes “Patrick” under his wing and … well, complications follow.

Bonus goodies include a new musical score prepared by silent film aficionado Ben Model and six minutes of found footage from the 1916 silent film Hold Fast.

Rambo: Last Blood From Lionsgate Home Entertainment On Dec. 17

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has selected Dec. 17 as the street date for a three-SKU helping of director Adrian Grunberg’s Rambo: Last Blood, starring Sylvester Stallone as the iconic John Rambo.

The ARR is a quick-to-market 88 days and domestic box office receipts currently stand at $44.5 million (with roughly an equal amount from overseas markets).

Bonus features — across all three SKUs — are limited to a pair of production featurettes — “Drawing Last Blood: Multipart Production Diary” and “From First Note to Last Blood: Music for the Massacres.”
