Universal Pictures Home Entertainment Locks In July 7 For The Home Entertainment Launch Of Trolls World Tour

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment will be going into the record books on July 7 with the home entertainment launch of the most expensive direct-to-video release EVER! 

The film in question is the $90 million production of the directing team of Walt Dohrn and David P. Smith’s Trolls World Tour, which was all set for a national theatrical rollout  — the money spent on promotion and advertising — and then theatres shutdown over the Covid-19 pandemic.   

Shelve it?   Universal Studios had that choice to make, but instead elected to use the advertising and the awareness that had been built up for the Trolls World Tour film and take it on-line to salvage what they could.   

The process continues on July 7 with a three-SKU home entertainment package media offering, which includes Combo Pack editions for both the 4K Ultra HD (with Blu-ray) and Blu-ray (with DVD) formats.   There will also be a stand-alone DVD edition.

As to bonus goodies, all of the release SKUs include a “Dance Party” viewing option.  There is also a commentary option from filmmakers Walt Dohrn (voice-actor-turned-director who co-directed the first Trolls movie) and David P. Smith (first theatrical effort … three-time Emmy nominee for The Mr. Peabody & Sherman Show), who are joined by producer Gina Shay (other producer credits include Trolls, Shrek Forever After, Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World, Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius, etc.).

Also common to all three release configurations are four featurettes — “Tiny Diamond Goes Back to School,” “Trolls Dance Academy,” “Trolls World Tourist Map” and “Trolls Perfect Harmony.”

Exclusive to the Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack editions are deleted scenes and the additional featurette titled “Trolls World Tour Backstage.”

Sunrise's Gundam Build Fighters Special Build Disc Heads To Blu-ray On Aug. 04

Sunrise, Inc., with sales and distribution support provided by Bayview Entertainment, has tabbed Aug. 4 for the Blu-ray debut of Gundam Build Fighters Special Build Disc.

This unique collection is an anime fans dream, especially for those who follow the adventures drawn from the Gundam universe.

So what’s included here?   We kick off with director Kenji Nagasaki’s 2017 release of Gundam Build Fighters GM's Counterattack, which is a stand-alone sequel to the Gundam Build Fighters series (“Gunpla” model builder Sei Lori teams up with Reiji, a fighter pilot, to create a competitive team).

Here, Sei Lori and friends are trapped in Yajima Staduim when the Gunpla Mafia sets up a massive Gunpla battle … when all seems lost it is Reiji to the rescue.

Next up is director by Shinya Watada’s Gundam Build Fighters Try: Island Wars, which follows the Try Fighters at the Nielsen Labs’ isolated tropical island … Gunpla have been mysterious taken over and are attack on their own!!

Finally, the Gundam Build Fighters Special Build Disc features all five episodes from the 2017 OVA, Gundam Build Fighters: Battlogue.   The five, eleven-minute episodes include are: “AI Battlogue,” “Smash the Enemy's Secret Factory!,” “The Adventures of Fumina and Gyanko,” “Our War” and “Gunpla is the Greatest!”

Mill Creek Entertainment's Becoming Evil: The Mafia Arrives On DVD On Aug. 11

Mill Creek Entertainment has a four-disc DVD collection targeted for home entertainment consumers with an interest in The Godfather, The Boardwalk Empire, The Untouchables and all-things dealing with organized crime.  

Titled Becoming Evil: The Mafia, consumers on Aug. 11 will get an in-depth look at the history of organized crime in the United States dating back to the 1800s.   Kicking off the collection is documentary filmmaker Kevin R. Hershberger’s six-part mini-series titled Gangster Empire - Rise of the Mob.

Hershberger takes the viewer through the history of “the Mob” with a focus on Prohibition, Atlantic City, Al Capone and the Roaring 20s, The St. Valentine’s Massacre, The Depression, J. Edgar Hoover and his “Public Enemies” list and a special focus on the Italian Mob and the real “Godfathers” of New York and finally out to Las Vegas for the new mobster “playground.”

Next up is the three-part series, Moonshine and the Dixie Mafia, which breaks down the rise of the so-called “Dixie Mafia” into a look at the world of Bourbon, the arrival of Prohibition and backwoods stills and the rise of stock car racing and back road smuggling at hectic speeds … and finally a look at the real-life Buford Pusser of Walking Tall fame, with insights provided by none other than his daughter, Dwana.

Rounding out the collection is the ten-part series, Vegas: The City the Mob Made.   Here we learn about Las Vegas before the arrival of organized crime, the “Golden Age” of Las Vegas, Las Vegas becoming a modern city, the decline of Mob Rule and more.

Wait!  Wait!  Wait, not done yet.   Mill Creek Entertainment’s Aug. 11 DVD release of Becoming Evil: The Mafia also includes a Digital download bonus, the nine-part mini-series titled Hollywood vs The Mob.

Each episode focuses on events in the real world and how Hollywood made movies to reflect those events.  Films like Little Caesar, The Public Enemy, Loan Shark, Marked Woman and The Black Godfather are discussed in this very different look at the rise of “The Mob.”

Oscilloscope Laboratories Tabs July 14 For The Release Of DVD And Blu-ray Editions Of Director Jack Henry Robbins' VHYes

Oscilloscope Laboratories has some good times lined up for July 14 with the DVD and Blu-ray debut of director Jack Henry Robbins’ VHYes.

This quirky comedy got a limited theatrical (yeah, yeah, yeah, we all know by now what that means … with the Covid-19 and all) and, for the record, arrives in the home entertainment packaged media marketplace with an ARR of 179 days.

In VHYes, we are introduced to Ralph (Mason McNulty — Assimilate, 12 Pups of Christmas), a twelve-year-old kid in the time of VHS.   Yes, it’s 1987 and Ralph has just celebrated Christmas with the gift of a video camera and is eager to use it.

He needs a tape for his project and that’s where things go south.   Ralph finds his parent’s wedding tape and begins haphazardly recording over it … and that’s the “movie” that we are tuned into.   His “must-see” cinema verite, stream-of-conscious video playlist … recorded from hither and yon.   

A while back, Oscilloscope put out (May of 2018 to be exact) a DVD and Blu-ray release that was simply titled Road Movie.   It is a simply hilarious collection of Russian dash-cam videos … assembled together featuring wrecks and other things that happen randomly on the highways and back roads of Russia.  It is deceptively simple entertainment and yet totally mesmerizing in its viewing.

Robbins’ VHYes is the 1987-era equivalent.   Ralph quickly learns that he can record anything from late night TV and that’s when it gets truly weird (ignore that his father is beginning to ask questions about the source of his tape).   

The entire movie is actually recorded on the same technology from the period and that makes it even stranger, if that is possible.   There is also a subtext that you begin to pick up on as the “movie” progresses … this technology will eventually become an addiction.

Bonus features include — are you ready for this — extended scenes with “Sexy Swedish Aliens” (we told you VHYes was weird) and two Sundance Film Festival short films from Jack Henry Robbins, Hot Winter and Painting with Joan (both equally weird and film festival winners as well).
