Documentary Filmmaker Danny Garcia's Nightclubbing: The Birth of Punk in NYC On DVD From MVD Entertainment Group On Mar. 10

MVD Entertainment Group announced this past week that documentary filmmaker Danny Garcia’s award-winning look at the birth of the Punk scene in New York City during the 1970s, Nightclubbing: The Birth of Punk in NYC, will be making its DVD debut on Mar. 10.

Max's Kansas City night spot was the center of alternative “culture” from 1970 to 1974, with the likes of Andy Warhol, Lou Reed, Allen Ginsberg and The Velvet Underground calling it home. Then came “glam” rock wave and David Bowie, Iggy Pop and the New York Dolls … and then Max's Kansas City was gone.

In stepped Tommy Dean Mills, who re-opened the club with “disco” in mind, but that didn’t work out, especially with Peter Crowley handling the booking.   Punk.  Maybe it didn’t have a name at the onset, but when you have Cherry Vanilla, Ruby and the Rednecks, the Ramones … Alice Cooper and even The Boss/Bruce Springsteen playing the venue it was certainly a happening place.  It shuddered again in 1981.

What filmmaker Danny Garcia (Sid: The Final Curtain, Rolling Stone: Life and Death of Brian Jones, Sad Vacation, Looking for Johnny, The Rise and Fall of Clash) has assembled is a time capsule view of vintage performances, coupled with a solid narrative about this unique period in time and then Garcia has connected it all with “those-who-there” interviews.   A piece of history — music and cultural history — told to perfection!

 

 

 

Bayview Entertainment Sets The Blu-ray Debut Of The World We Knew For Feb. 28

Bayview Entertainment has one of the most ingenious mixed-genre thrillers lined up for the Blu-ray marketplace during the first quarter of 2023.

Arriving on Feb. 28 is none other than the directing team of Matthew Benjamin Jones and Luke Skinner’s 2020 FrightFest-winner, The World We Knew.

A gangster film; crime, violence, greed … it’s all there.   A horror film, complete with a haunted house and victim pool — a very violent victim pool, but classic in every sense of the word.

It was supposed to be an easy score, but things went south, a cop is dead, and Carpenter (Finbar Lynch — York Witches Society, Black '47) and his five cohorts — one of them not likely to survive his wounds from the police shootout (Simon Rhodes) — make it to a “safe house.”   It’s a creepy place that has seen better days, but at least they can lay-low until the “brains” of the outfit can come to their rescue.

It doesn’t take long for them to begin bickering.  Is there a rat?  Tick tock … tick tock.  And, it doesn’t help that tough-guy Gordon (played by Johann Myers — The Phantom of the Open, Undergods) becomes more and more unstable as the drugs and alcohol kick in!   He’s packing and he’s ready to rumble.

The kid of the group, Eddie (Alex Wells), also begins to unravel as the cop he gunned down begins to haunt him — ghosts in a rundown, creepy place, nah, couldn’t happen.   Or maybe, just maybe, this “safe house” really is haunted … and visions, drugs, alcohol, violence, distrust and fear are the things that these haunted house “spirits” feed on!!

2K Restoration For Director Tim Burstall's Attack Force Z On Blu-ray From Severin Films This Coming Mar. 28

Severin Films, with sales and distribution support provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has a new 2K film restoration of director Tim Burstall’s World War II thriller, Attack Force Z, lined up for the Blu-ray marketplace on Mar. 28.

Although a routine World War II action flick, Attack Force Z is noted for its cast of relative newcomers (at the time), which include Mel Gibson, Sam Neill and John Phillip Law.

The version here is “complete,” in that the source material is from the original 35mm camera negative being stored at The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia.

Bonus features include the featurette titled “The Z Men Debriefed.”

 

 

 

Paramount Home Entertainment's Chicago: 20th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray Ready On Feb. 07

Paramount Home Entertainment has tabbed Feb. 7 as the street date for a Blu-ray release of director Rob Marshall’s Chicago: 20^th Anniversary Edition.

The winner of the Best Picture Oscar in 2002 (when that honor still meant something), along with Best Supporting Actress (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and four technical Oscars, this Blu-ray edition includes commentary filmmaker Rob Marshall and screenwriter Bill Condon.

Other bonus goodies included in this celebration are a dozen extended musical performances and whopping 14 featurettes.

 

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment Tabs Jan. 24 For Director Tommy Wirkola's Violent Night • Feb. 14 For Steven Spielberg's The Fabelmans

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment was busy this past week dealing out street dates for recent theatrical releases making the transition to the home entertainment packaged media marketplace. 

First up, arriving on Jan. 24, is director Tommy Wirkola’s Christmas-season themed action/comedy, Violent Night, starring David Harbour (as Santa), John Leguizamo and Beverly D’Angelo.

The ARR is a lightning-quick 53 days, with box office receipts currently standing at $49.4 million.

Planned for release are a stand-alone DVD edition, as well as a Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack SKU.

Bonus goodies include commentary with director Tommy Wirkola (Dead Snow, Dead Snow: Red vs. Dead, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters), producer Guy Danella, and scriptwriters Pat Casey and Josh Miller, extended and deleted scenes and a trio of featurettes — “Quarrelin’ Kringle,” “Santa’s Helpers: The Making of Violent Night” and “Deck the Halls with Brawls.”

In other release news from Universal this past week, writer/director Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans will be making its way home on Feb. 14 as a full-spread selection of home entertainment package media product offerings.

The ARR works out to 95 days and box office receipts — especially for a Spielberg film — are running a little light at $13.4 million (against a reported $40 million production budget).

Planned for distribution are Combo Pack editions for the 4K Ultra HD (with Blu-ray) and Blu-ray (with DVD) formats, plus a stand-alone DVD purchasing option.

Bonus features exclusive to the Combo Pack editions are two featurettes — “Family Dynamics” and “Crafting the World of the Fabelmans” — with the additional featurette titled “The Fabelmans: A Personal Journey” common to all SKUs.

 

 

Disney Media And Entertainment Celebrates 100th Anniversary With Mickey And Minnie: 10 Classics Short, Volume 1 On DVD And Blu-ray On Feb. 07

Disney Media and Entertainment announced this past week that DVD and Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack editions of Mickey & Minnie: 10 Classic Shorts, Volume 1 will be heading home on Feb. 7 as part of the studio’s 100^th Anniversary celebration (note: Metropolitan Theatres is also celebrating its 100^th Anniversary in 2023).

Included in the collection are 10 theatrical cartoons (in chronological order): Steamboat Willie (1928), On Ice (1935), Thru the Mirror (1936), Hawaiian Holiday (1937), Brave Little Tailor (1938, Oscar-nominated), Mr. Mouse Takes a Trip (1940), Whirlwind (1941), The Little Bath Day (1946), Figaro and Frankie (1947) and Mickey’s Delayed Date (1947).

Fans of Walt Disney — and the studio’s legacy during Walt’s tenure — are already grumbling (posting online) that if this is the kick-off to the 100^th Anniversary celebration it is a little half-hearted.  

Questions being asked … why not 4K?; why not Walt Disney Treasures: Mickey Mouse in Black and White and Walt Disney Treasures: Mickey Mouse in Living Color reissued as either a Blu-ray or 4K Ultra HD collections?   The year is early, there is plenty of time for Disney Media and Entertainment to step up its game.
