Artsploitation Films has
tabbed Oct. 17 for the release of both DVD and Blu-ray editions of
writer/director Craig Anderson’s Down Under horror tale, Red Christmas.
The film had a very
limited (just three theatres) theatrical break — basically a showcase run for
critics — just prior to the Labor Day weekend.
The ARR comes in at just 53 days.
This PR strategy worked like a charm as the reviews were solid — the
L.A. Times review alone was worth the costs of underwriting such a limited
theatrical run.
Dee Wallace, who gave us
such horror gems as The Hills Have Eyes, The Howling and Cujo — not to forget her
performance in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial — scores as the target of a deranged
killer on Christmas Day (which is the summertime in Australia). Her family (victim pool) has gathered for
the holiday festivities and Cletus (Sam Campbell) is out to kill them all!
When you have a slasher
film, it is graded by the body count and the creativity in getting to that
bloody number. There’s a twist in Red
Christmas from Anderson — which we will not reveal here — that goes to
motivation. Even if the reason seems
justified in the mind of crazy Cletus, his ax-wielding craziness is just that,
insane! Bloody insane!!
Bonus goodies include
commentary from filmmaker Craig Anderson, a blooper reel and video sessions
with Dee Wallace, Craig Anderson and cast member Gerald Odwyer.
