Icarus films will be
teaming up with Bullfrog Films for the Jan. 8, 2019 DVD debut of documentary
filmmaker John Feldman’s Symbiotic Earth.
This intimate look at the
life and theories of evolutionary theories of the late Professor Lynn Margulis are
presented as ten “essays” (segments or topics), which range from “How Lynn
Margulis Coerced Me Into Making This Film,” “Confronting the Neo-Darwinian
Capitalistic Zeitgeist,” “Bacteria Run the Planet” and “Evolution Through
Mergers.”
Margulis was no
wallflower when it came to her revolutionary theories. As the former spouse of both Carl Sagan (two
sons) and crystallographer Thomas N. Margulis (a son and daughter), she had the
temperament, intellect and the education to explore ideas that proved to be
neo-Darwin and which led to the Gaia hypothesis (living organisms interact with
the inorganic world synergistically).
Filmmaker John Feldman
presents vintage footage and interviews with Margulis and comments, interviews
and insights from 20 different scientists and colleagues, including anthropologist
Mary Catherine Bateson, biology professor Betsey Dexter Dyer, author Stephan
Harding (“Animate Earth: Science, Intuition and Gaia”) and environmental
educator and activist Fritjof Capra.
