VCI Entertainment will
certainly please genre fans on Feb. 26 with the news this week that a new 2K
restoration (from the original 35mm film negative) of cult filmmaker Eddie
Romero’s 1971 horror treasure, Beast of the Yellow Night, will be
available on that date as Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack.
John Ashley was a regular
in the Beach Party films starring Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello
during the early ‘60s and then his marriage to Deborah Walley blew up and with
the “beach scene” having run its course he took a film gig in the Philippines,
which turned into a career changer.
He met Eddie Romero and,
as they say, the rest is history. They
combined forces to produce such films as Brides of Blood, The
Mad Doctor of Blood Island and Beast of Blood, which led to Beast
of the Yellow Night, where they co-produced under their own banner,
with Romero directing and Ashley starring.
It was a monster hit,
produced on a modest budget, and got Roger Corman’s attention, which brought
about a series of “women in prison” sexploitation gems!
From beach parties to a
pack with the devil (as the beast here), John Ashley had one hell of a film
career … with Beast of the Yellow Night gaining a genre-fan following over the
years. New 2K restoration, Blu-ray … who
could ask for more!!
Bonus features include a
video session with filmmaker Eddie Romero.
