Indican Pictures latest DVD release has old school
meeting new tech in writer/director Chip Baker’s July 2 debut of Bounty
Killer.
The film has a limited theatrical run earlier in the
year and arrives on DVD with an ARR of 158 days.
This homage
to Spaghetti Westerns — even to the point of filming it on location in Tabernas,
Almeria and Andalucia, Spain … the same spots as Sergio Leon’s summer of 1969
masterpiece, Once Upon a Time in the West —
stars Crispian Belfrage (Six Bullets to Hell, Morgan, As Good
as Dead, etc.) as a man with no name,
who we come to know as simply the “Bounty Killer.”
These “throw back” elements are deftly blended with the
latest in high tech filmmaking, including the use of drones, to give Bounty
Killer a polished look that belies its modest
production budget. In a word, cool … if
you didn’t know better, you might think you’ve come across a long-lost Django
flick, or better yet, a youthful Clint Eastwood will suddenly ride into view. Olivier Merckx’s camera work also gives Bounty Killer that
little extra.
It is the wedding day of Guadalupe Delgado (Naila
Mansour — who also co-starred with Belfrage in Six
Bullets to Hell), but the serenity of the
ceremony is shattered when gunmen storm the chapel and gun down the groom and
take her hostage. Her father, Gonzalo (Antonio
Mayans — Snakewoman, Revenge of the Alligator Ladies,
Diamonds of Kilimandjaro, etc.), desperate for
her safe return, and knowing full well that paying the ransom may not assure
her freedom, hires a professional to kill them all and set free his daughter.
Genre fans, especially those of followers of the
classic Spaghetti Westerns, know that the action will be non-stop, the “Bounty
Killer” will be out-gunned and pitted against seemingly impossible odds in his
mission to save the lovely Guadalupe from a fate — possibly worse than death
— and only his wits (if not dulled by his own weaknesses) and his trigger
finger can even the odds!
It won’t be easy … he’s against “lawmen,” headed by
the ruthless Cavendish (Ethan McDowell — Alien
Expedition, Stained), who use their “official” power
to hide their true business dealings.
Fire away “Bounty Killer” and you are immediately on the wrong side of
the law … ah, what hell, empty those six-shooters, rescue Guadalupe and sort it
all out later on!!
