Arrow Video, with domestic sales and distribution
support provided by MVD Entertainment Group, announced this past week that Nov.
12 will be the street date for a double-disc Blu-ray presentation of auteur filmmaker
Anthony Mann’s 1954 Canadian frontier saga, The Far
Country.
Not only is Arrow Video preparing a 4K restoration
from the original film elements, but this is a double-disc showcase of two
different aspect ratio viewings of the film —the original Technicolor
theatrical release aspect ratio of 2.00:1 and the 1.85:1 alternate aspect
ratio.
This all-star cast — James Stewart, Walter Brennen,
Ruth Romain, John McIntire, with Jay C. Flippen, Corinne Calvet, Steve Brodie
and Harry Morgan — “end-of-an-era “Western” (the action takes place in 1896)
was filmed entirely on location in Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada, with
additional location filming done at the Athabasca Glacier and Mt. Edith Cavell.
As to bonus features — in addition to the two
viewing options — there is commentary by film scholar Adrian Martin and an
all-new feature-length documentary titled American
Frontiers: Anthony Mann at Universal,
featuring Mann biographer Alan K. Rode, Western writer C. Courtney Joyner,
script supervisor Michael Preece and film critics Michael Schlesinger and Rob
Word.
Plus there is the newly-minted featurette titled, “Mann
of the West, featuring observations by film critic Kim Newman.
