Unearthed Films, with sales and distribution
expertise provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has lined up Oct. 13 for the
delivery of both DVD and Blu-ray editions of filmmakers Danny Lee and Herman
Yau’s 1993 black “horror” comedy, The Untold Story
(aka: The Eight Immortals Restaurant: The Untold Story).
Long before director Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite, Lee
and Yau served up this wicked tale of Wong Chi Hang (Anthony Chau-Sang Wong — Initial D,
2 Young, Princess D, etc.), who can be extremely
violent (from the opening prologue) and has a lust for Mahjong, but inexplicitly
ends up as the new owner of the famous Eight Immortals Restaurant in Macau.
What happen to Cheng Lam (Siu-Ming Lau), the
rightful owner and his family? Perhaps
the replacement in ownership would have gone unnoticed, except a bag of body
parts has washed up on a local beach and questions are now being asked. Exactly where is Cheng Lam and how did the
new “pork bun” menu item become so damn popular.
Bonus goodies for this “Cat III” (China’s equivalent
to NC-17) classic include two commentary options, one featuring writer/director
Herman Yau and the second featuring the film’s star, Anthony Chau-Sang Wong,
plus there is documentary filmmaker Calum Waddell’s 2018 feature-length film
titled Category 3, The Untold Story of Hong Kong
Exploitation and the featurette titled “Cantonese
Carnage.”
The Untold Story is
presented in Cantonese with English subtitles.
