Genre fans will be having a very merry Christmas this year as Bayview Entertainment announced this past week that director Kevin Tenney’s 2007 indie horror gem, Brain Dead, will be available on DVD on Dec. 22.
Sure, you could rush right out now and purchased a used copy from the film’s original 2010 release for about 95 bucks on eBay, or be patient, all good things come to those who wait.
Filmmaker Kevin Tenney gave genre fans Witchboard, Night of the Demons and Endangered Species (among others), so by the time Brain Dead rolled out to the film festival circuit beginning in October 2007 people knew what to expect (the screening dates included stops at the Terror Film Festival, B-Movie Film Festival, Phoenix International Horror & Sci-Fi Film Festival, Rhode Island International Horror Film Festival, San Francisco Indiefest … and more; an impressive festival run).
The movie itself has all of the traditional horror elements, which are drawn touchstone-like from such horror classic as The Blob, Night of the Living Dead and any haunted house thriller that pops to mind.
First, we have the “victim pool,” which is certainly an odd mix. There are two escaped convicts by names of Clarence Singer (Joshua Benton — The Woodsman) and Bob Jules (David Crane — Pass the Light), two very attractive “hikers,” Sherry Morgan (Sarah Grant Brendecke) and Claudia Bush (Michelle Tomlinson — Target Practice, The Cellar Door), and lastly, Reverend Farnsworth (Andy Forrest — as Kyle in the Parks and Recreation sitcom and as Captain Guiness O'Hara in The WiseGuys television series) and his friend, Amy Smoots (Cristina Tiberia), whose car breaks down and they get stranded in the woods.
All six end up at a remote cabin, where we know what
happened to the owner. Like the old man in
The Blob, he comes
in contact with a meteorite and is infected by an alien species, which turns
him into a flesh-craving zombie, who only wants to go home … which just happens
to be where the members of the “victim pool” have gathered (for different reasons).
While the cons have their sights on the hikers, and the good-reverend would like to get know Amy a little better, they must put aside their carnal lusts and focus on the zombie at the door.
Director Kevin Tenney’s Brain Dead delivers exactly as promised. Blood, zombies, well-endowed hikers, gore and a whole lot more. Who lives? Who dies? Dec. 22 on DVD from Bayview Entertainment to find out … in the meantime, do not spend ninety-five dollars on a used copy; consider it a well-earned stocking-stuffer and at a fraction of the cost!!
