Arrow Video, with domestic sales and distribution expertise provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has selected Jan. 18 as the street date for the Blu-ray debut of director Yasuzo Masumura’s 1966 (1971 domestic arthouse release) horrors-of-war classic, Red Angel.
It is 1939 and the Sino-Japanese War has been raging for two long years. At the front is Japanese nurse Sakura Nishi (Ayako Wakao — Seisaku's Wife, A Wife Confesses), who takes pity on many of her dying and maimed patients with “kindness.”
It is a hellish place and the surgeon in charge, Dr. Okabe (Shinsuke Ashida — Woman of the Lake, A Taxing Woman, The Battle of Manchuria) has taken to deadening the daily grind of dealing with the dead and dying by using morphine. Their relationship — doctor and nurse — will play out as a doomed love affair, juxtaposed to a war that seems to have no end.
Red Angel is presented in Japanese with English subtitles.
Bonus features include a newly minted commentary with film scholar David Desser, an introduction by film critic Tony Rayns and the featurette titled “Not All Angels have Wings.”
