VCI Entertainment Targets Jan. 18 For The Release Of Santo: El Enmuscarado De Plata Eight-Film Blu-ray Collection

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

VCI Entertainment announced this past week that an eight-film collection,  starring the iconic masked Mexican wrestler Santo, will be available for fans to enjoy on Blu-ray this coming Jan. 18.

All eight films have new 4K film restorations from their respective 35mm camera negatives (with proper widescreen aspect ratios) and the English-language soundtracks have been fully restored as well.

Titled Santo: El Enmascarado De Plata, the four-disc, eight-film Blu-ray collection showcases eight of his most beloved film adventures.

We kick off the action with his 1963 film, Santo in the Wax Museum, which was the first feature film starring Santo (Rodolfo Guzman Huerta) to be dubbed in English (his films were released theatrically in the United States to the Spanish-language market through Azteca).

Here he gets involved in the investigation of mysterious kidnappings, which turn out to be a plot by Dr. Carrol (Claudio Brook The Exterminating Angel, The Devil’s Rain, etc.) to build an army of creatures that he controls.   Not to worry, El Santo does manage to work in a few bouts of wrestling during his investigation.

This collection also includes, in chronological order, director René Cardona’s 1969 film release of Santo in the Treasure of Dracula (with Aldo Monti as Dracula), it is Santo to the rescue in director René Cardona’s 1970 “Western,” Santo vs. the Riders of Terror, which features leper hombres, and the 1971 horror tale, Santo in the Vengeance of the Mummy.

The following year, 1972, we have director Miguel M. Delgado’s Santo vs. Frankenstein's Daughter, where his blood is need by Dr. Freda Frankenstein (Gina Romano) for her experiments.

For the next two films in the collection, Santo teams up with fellow wrestling sensation, the Blue Demon (Alejandro Muñoz Moreno) for Santo & Blue Demon vs Dracula & the Wolfman (1973, with Aldo Monti back as Dracula, with Agustín Martínez Solares as the Wolfman) and Santo & Blue Demon vs. Dr. Frankenstein (1974, with Jorge Russek as Dr. Frankenstein).

Closing out the collection is director Miguel M. Delgado’s 1974 curse-of-the-mummy tale, Santo & Mantequilla in the Revenge of La Llorona (aka: The Revenge of the Crying Woman), with Kikis Herrera Calles as La Llorona.

Bonus features include introductions to each film in the collection from film historian Dr. David Wilt.

All eight films will also be available on Jan. 18 as DVD double-features.
