Paramount Home Entertainment Selects Nov. 01 As The Takeoff Date For Tom Cruise's Top Gun: Maverick

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

Tom Cruise saved Hollywood, well, at least stopped the bleeding for a few weeks.   Theatre owners love him.   Audiences applauded … thank you, Tom Cruise, you delivered the perfect summer movie.

With control over how Top Gun: Maverick was to be rolled-out, Cruise had no intention of letting it go anywhere but into theatres first … so he waited.   And, he waited … and he waited … his savvy understanding of how things work has paid off to the tune of $673.7 million in domestic theatrical ticket sales (and still counting; the film was released at the end of May).  Add in the foreign markets and you are talking about over $1.4 billion in box office receipts worldwide.

Not only did he deliver the goods, but he got people back into theatres who had not been there since the pandemic nonsense started … and continued way past its expiration date.   They were not disappointed.

You can have your issues with Tom Cruise over this and that, but when it comes to managing his career and the films that he releases, he is hands-down the best in the business.   And, while we’re at it, Sandra Bullock is currently the best on the female side of the ledger.   If they ever got together … hmmmm.

In any case, Paramount Home Entertainment made it official this past week.  Director Joseph Kosinski’s Top Gun: Maverick will be heading home as a three-SKU home entertainment packaged media product offering on Nov. 1.

None of that way-too-quick 67-day; 81-day swings that have popped-up as theatrical to home video transitions for blockbuster films that we have seen of late … Top Gun: Maverick takes its victory lap with a leisurely ARR of 158 days.

Planned for release are stand-alone (no Combo Packs editions) for all three home entertainment formats — 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD.

Bonus goodies are limited to the 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray SKUs.   These include featurettes — “Cleared for Take Off,” “Breaking New Ground: Filming Top Gun: Maverick,” “A Love Letter to Aviation,” “Forging the Darkstar,” “Masterclass with Tom Cruise: Cannes Film Festival,” “James Corden’s Top Gun Training with Tom Cruise” — plus two music videos: Lady Gaga’s “Hold My Hand” and OneRepublic’s “I Ain’t Worried.”

Nov. 1, mark it down … Top Gun: Maverick from Paramount Home Entertainment.  Best movie of the year (sorry, Oscar nominations will be limited to technical aspects only as the film isn’t woke enough to garner a Best Picture Oscar nomination… that “honor” is reserved for those movies that no one has seen in theatres these past few years).
