The Criterion Collection announced its November slate of new home entertainment packaged media releases this past week, which includes three new 4K Ultra HD product offerings.
Director Jane Campion’s 2021 Best Picture nominee, The Power of the Dog, will be available on Nov. 8 as a 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack, plus there will stand-alone DVD and Blu-ray SKUs as well.
Netflix, with a reputation for playing fast and loose with theatrical box office results, was mums the word on ticket sales for the film’s limited Oscar-qualifying theatrical showcase. Industry estimates are $160,000 in ticket sales, which is pretty pathetic for a film nominated for Best Picture, plus 11 other Oscar nominations, including a win for Jane Campion as Best Director.
For the record, the ARR works out to 354 days.
Bonus features include video sessions with filmmaker Jane Campion, composer Jonny Greenwood, director of photography Ari Wegner, Kirsten Dunst (nominated for Best Supporting Actress) and producer Tanya Seghatchian, plus behind-the-scene footage from New Zealand.
Also getting the 4K Ultra HD treatment from Criterion is director Spike Lee’s 1992 film release of Malcolm X, starring Denzel Washington (Oscar-nominated for his performance), which will be available on Nov. 22.
Bonus features include the vintage commentary with Spike Lee, cinematographer Ernest Dickerson, editor Barry Alexander Brown and costume designer Ruth E. Carter, plus newly minted video sessions with Spike Lee and journalist/screenwriter Barry Michael Cooper … also sessions with Delroy Lindo and composer Terence Blanchard.
The other 4K Ultra HD release in November from the Criterion Collection is Wong Kar Wai’s In the Mood for Love, which streets on Nov. 1.
