In something of a shocker, the Criterion Collection has teamed up with Walt Disney Studios for their first 4K Ultra HD release … not just any deep library film, but director Andrew Stanton’s 2008 Best Animated Oscar-winner, WALL•E.
Arriving on Nov. 22 as a 4K Ultra HD/2 Blu-ray Combo Pack edition, WALL•E comes loaded with extras. We begin with two commentary options … the first with Stanton (Finding Nemo, Finding Dory, John Carter) and the second featuring co-producer Lindsey Collins, story artist Derek Thompson and lead animator Angus MacLane.
Also, to be counted among the bonus features are director Leslie Iwerks’ 2007 documentary, The Pixar Story, the newly prepared featurette titled “WALL•E: A to Z,” deleted scenes, two short films — A Story and BURN•E — and more.
This is not the only shocker of late from the studio … Oscar-winning director Robert Zemeckis’ (Forrest Gump) latest film, Pinocchio — with a reported production budget of $150 million — skipped the theatrical experience and went right to Disney+. Inventive online entrepreneurs (ahoy maties, thar be pirates in these waters) were served-up a pristine master of the film and took full advantage of it this past week with multiple Blu-ray product offerings.
So why not a third shocker!! Perhaps this new arrangement with Disney will lead to a Criterion Collection edition of Song of the South … after all, the 100th Anniversary of the studio is on the immediate horizon. That would be an important release to mark that milestone.
Yes, there are many pirated editions of Song of the South out there floating around … but how about a 4K edition with the Criterion Collection touch … my, oh, my, what a wonderful day that would be!!
