Liberation Hall, with sales and distribution support provided by MVD Entertainment Group, announced this past week that the thought-to-be-lost 1982 live concert of Darlene Love at the Hop Singh jazz club in Los Angeles, Darlene Love: Live 1982, has been unearthed and will be available for the first time on DVD this coming Apr. 7.
Darlene Love (aka: Darlene Wright) had a number one Billboard Hit single in 1962, but as history records, she did not get credit for it. The single? “He’s a Rebel,” which was produced by Phil Spector and released by The Crystals — they were unable to make a recording session and Darlene Love was quickly recruited to fill in.
Phil Spector did it to her on more than one occasion. “Ghosting” her … and perhaps dooming her as an artist on her own. Indeed, she was a backup singer on such hits as “Be My Baby,” “Johnny Angel” and “Da Doo Ron Ron.” Hit after hit with a golden voice, but just a backup.
Because of her raw talent, Darlene Love overcame the “backup” role assigned her and by the early 1980s she had come into her own with the Tony-nominated musical, Leader of the Pack.
This independently produced showcase concert for Darlene Love took place on Apr. 21, 1982 at the Hop Singh. She delivered a ten-song set capped off by a Gospel Medley.
Included in the mix are the aforementioned “He’s a Rebel” and “Da Doo Ron Ron,” plus such selections include “Wait Til' My Bobby Gets Home,” Hungry Heart” and “Sometimes When We Touch.”
