Controversy swirled when Annabel Oakes, the creator of Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, got a hold of Ryan Gajewski at the Hollywood Reporter on June 23 and delivered the headline quote: “devastated at the complete erasure of our show.”
It was a PR nightmare. The series made its debut on Paramount+ on June 1 and three weeks later it was being cancelled. Being cancelled is one thing, that happens all the time, but Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies would go into the great abyss on June 30 … never to be seen again!! Erased.
This was hot on the heels of Disney’s $1.8 billion “monetization” of some 50 films and TV series … meaning that they would be essentially “burned” on a “digital bonfire” and never be available in any form again. Ever!
Paramount got the message and took steps this past week to “fix” the problem — sort of — with a peace offering. The series will become available as a VOD buying option immediately.
And here is where it gets a little odd, almost as an afterthought, Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies will also be available to own as a four-disc DVD collection on Nov. 07 … the VOD followed by the DVD gives the “helper” community over four months to fill the physical media void.
That, however, is a something of a moot point — like the barn door being closed after the horse has scampered away — because as soon as the controversary erupted the “helper” community was all over it with both DVD and Blu-ray product offerings.
As for the DVD, bonus features are still in the development stage — 30 to 40-minute’s worth are promised by the Nov. 07 street date. Stay tuned.
