Included in this unique anime mix are director Kou Matsuo’s 2010 three-episode “mini-series” titled Gunpla Builders Beginning G.
This special anime production was created as a celebration of the 30th anniversary of the launch of the Gundam model kits … mecha anime aficionados swarmed to these delights in 1980 (which followed the Mobile Suit Gundam series launch in 1979).
Here, Haru Irei (voiced by Tsubasa Yonaga) comes face to face with Gunpla, the Beginning Gundam. After constructing the Beginning Gundam, Haru immerses himself into the “Gunpla Battle” game … and meets unexpected rivals.
Next in this Aug. 15 anime trilogy is director Se Jun Kim’s 2017 short film, Mobile Suit Gundam: Twilight AXIS - Remain of the Red.
A team has been dispatched to investigate the remnants of the Axis asteroid and once they arrive, they are attacked by the Birnam’s newly-minted Gundam … there might be treachery within the ranks of the Earth Federation team as the conflict escalates.
And, lastly, director Mankyū’s fun-filled 2014, 19-episode series, Mobile Suit Gundam-san, gives us the manga-turned-anime tale of the One Year War and the Newtype reformation … lots of lessons will be learned!
All three Blu-ray releases in this Gundam Side Stories from Sunrise, Inc. on Aug. 15 are presented in Japanese with English subtitles.
