OMG! That’s what immediately jumps to mind when watching documentary filmmaker Nicolas Jack Davies’ music-themed biopic Omar and Cedric: If This Ever Gets Weird, which chronicles the life-experiences of Omar Rodríguez-López and his long-time friend and fellow recording artist Cedric Bixler-Zavala.
Oscilloscope Laboratories announced this past week that both DVD and Blu-ray editions will be streeting on Feb. 25.
What makes this look at the decades-long ups and downs of At the Drive-In, The Mars Volta and other band incarnations of musicians “Omar and Cedric” is the primary source for the video footage, which is countless hours recorded over the years by Omar.
Often raw and crude (the glory of old VHS recordings), film editors David Atkinson and Gary Forrester did yeoman’s work in assembling Davies’ documentary narrative into both a riveting/revealing look at the music of Rodríguez-López and Bixler-Zavala and a coherent examination how their often stormy relationship survived sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll (breakups and reunions) … exactly how many times did The Mars Volta form and reform?
The film made its debut at London’s Raindance Film Festival in October of 2023, skipped across the pond for a March of 2024 showcase at the South by Southwest Film Festival and continued to work the festival circuit until Oscilloscope released the film with in November with a limited theatrical showcase. For the record, the ARR works out to 95 days.
Fans of The Mars Volta (et al) will definitely want to check out the DVD and Blu-ray release Omar and Cedric: If This Ever Gets Weird from Oscilloscope Laboratories on Feb. 25 … those new initiates to the world of “Omar and Cedric” will not be disappointed in this story well-told.
