Severin Films, with sales and distribution expertise provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has a magnificent collection of classic genre delights from the filmmaking talents of Eddie Romero and Gerry de Leon.

Titled Fear in the Philippines: The Complete Blood Island Films, this double-disc Blu-ray edition features four classic horror delights — all four films with new 4K scans and uncut in their presentation — will be available for fans to savor on Mar. 25.

So what cinematic treats does Severin Films have in this must-have horror collection?

We kick off with director Gerardo de Leon’s (with an uncredited Romero) 1959, 1964 and 1969 film release of Terror is a Man (screenwriter Paul Harber’s loose adaptation of H. G. Wells’ 1896 novel, “The Island of Dr. Moreau”).

Why so many release dates?  The first was through Valiant Films as part of the double bill with Romero’s The Scavengers.

Enter Samuel M. Sherman, with producer Kane W. Lynn’s Hemisphere Pictures (later Independent-International Pictures Corp.), and Terror is a Man saw a second life in theatres in 1964.   And then Sherman retitled the film Blood Creature (among others) for a 1969 theatrical re-issue.

It’s important to understand the dynamics of Eddie Romero, Gerry de Leon, Kane W. Lynn and Samuel M. Sherman … and actor John Ashley.   The next three films in the collection all involve this combination of players in one form or another.

These films are: Brides of Blood (1968), Mad Doctor of Blood Island (1969) and Beast of Blood (1971).
