Arrow Video Tabs Dec. 4 For The Blu-ray Release Of Director Ingmar Bergman's The Serpent's Egg

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
In 1976, Sweden’s iconic filmmaking legend, Ingmar Bergman, fled his native land.   He was being hounded by government officials over the issue of tax evasion, which was later withdrawn as being without merit … but the damage to his reputation and the humiliation that followed had been done.

He had been working on a script in various forms since 1966, which was based on his pre-war experiences with a pro-Nazi family in Germany … he lived with them as an exchanged student.   Now, back in Germany, he decided to finish the script … it would become his first film produced outside of Sweden in his filmmaking career.

Arrow Video, with domestic sales and distribution expertise provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has tabbed Dec. 4 as the Blu-ray street date for a special edition of that film … The Serpent’s Egg.

The film, which stars David Carradine and Liv Ullmann, takes place in the early 1920s in Germany.   Carradine plays Abel Rosenberg, an American living in post World War I Germany, as a trapeze artist who has been let-go from the circus.   His brother Max was his partner and has recently committed suicide …his reasons will become clear as the film progresses.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyMax’s ex-wife is a cabaret performer by the name of Manuela (Ullmann), who is not particularly shocked when Abel tells her of Max’s death (how odd).   Also in the mix is a sinister fellow by the name of Hans Vergerus (Heinz Bennent), who is something of a childhood friend of Abel’s … perhaps pre-war.

There is also Police Inspector Bauer (played by Gert Fröbe) who takes more than an interest in Abel, especially when several individuals loosely connected to Abel, Max and Manuela turn up dead.

Bergman’s The Serpent’s Egg takes us down a Kafkaesque rabbit hole that foreshadows the rise of Hitler’s Nazi Germany.   The film also, in a not so subtle way, is Bergman’s way of hitting back at the “power of the state” and the control it has over the helpless individual, which is something of a metaphor for his own experiences with his native Sweden.

Bonus features include commentary from David Carradine, the archival featurette titled “Away From Home” and the newly prepared video session titled “Bergman’s Egg” featuring critic and author Barry Forshaw (“Death in a Cold Climate: Scandinavian Crime Fiction,” “Nordic Noir” “Sex and Film,” etc.).

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Selects Nov. 20 For The Release Of DVD And Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack Editions Of Director Jon M. Chu's Crazy Rich Asians

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Warner Bros. Home Entertainment took a look at the November/December home entertainment release calendar and took notice of a hole on Nov. 20.  Nothing in the way of major new theatrical summer hit was locked into that date … a key spot on the lead in to the Christmas-selling season.   So they grabbed it!

On that pre-Thanksgiving street-date Tuesday there will be the mid-August comedy smash, director Jon M. Chu’s film adaptation of Kevin Kwan’s 2013 international best-selling novel, Crazy Rich Asians.

The ARR is 95 days and late summer multiplex venues hummed to the tune of $169.2 million in box office receipts.

Planned for release are DVD and Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack editions.

Kwan’s 2015 follow-up book, “China Rich Girlfriend,” has already been picked up for development … so expect a sequel will be in the works soon.

As to bonus goodies for Crazy Rich Asians, common to both release SKUs is the featurette titled “Crazy Rich Fun.”   Exclusive to the Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack product offering are a gag reel, deleted scenes and a commentary option teaming filmmaker Jon M. Chu (G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Now You See Me 2) and novelist Kevin Kwan.

Master is presented in Mandarin with English subtitles and features deleted scenes and Zhou’s segment on Ripley’s Believe it or Not.

Paramount Home Media Taps Nov. 6 For The DVD Debut Of Who Is America

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Paramount Home Media has circled Nov. 6 on its home entertainment release calendar for the DVD debut of Showtime’s irreverent “gotcha” comedy series, Who is America?, starring Sacha Baron Cohen.

All seven episodes featuring Cohen as various character inventions whose purpose is to ambush the pretentious and ego-inflated media, entertainment and political personalities who populate America these days are included.

Plus, there are deleted and extended scenes culled from the various episodes (for broadcast time considerations) featured as bonus materials.

Undercrank Productions Picks Oct. 30 For The DVD Release Of Found at “Mostly Lost”: Volume 2

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Silent film archivist and historian Ben Model and his Undercrank Productions home entertainment label will be releasing the DVD collection of Found at “Mostly Lost”: Volume 2 on Oct. 30.

Working with the Library of Congress and its annual “Film Identification Workshops” — where fans and historians gather to view films that no longer contain proper identification — Undercrank Productions has gathered together ten such “mysteries” for this unique collection.

According to Model, “These films have not been restored and appear in the same “preserved-as-found” state as they were in when screened at “Mostly Lost.”  He continued by saying, “I have created a pair of title cards for each film that precedes the actual film, one that shows the “unidentified as” name of the film and one for the correct name and credits and release information.”

Included in the Found at “Mostly Lost”: Volume 2 collection are Snub Pollard’s 1922 comedy short (directed by none other than Charley Chase), Do Me a Favor, and the 1922 comedy short, Derby Day, starring Monty Banks and Lucille Hutton (this is not to be confused with the Hal Roach/Rascals silent short of the same name, which was released theatrically during this same period).

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment Picks Dec. 4 For The Release Of Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack And DVD Editions Of The Happytime Murders And Operation Finale

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Universal Pictures Home Entertainment will be guiding the STX Entertainment film production of director Brian Henson’s The Happytime Murders to its home entertainment launch on Dec. 4.

OK, Melissa McCarthy is not bulletproof.   After a string of hits that included Life of the Party, The Boss, Tammy, The Heat, etc., she bombed.   It wasn’t in the category of, oh, let’s say, Ishtar, but The Happytime Murders with just $20.7 million in summertime box office receipts didn’t exactly set the world on fire.

The film will do just fine on DVD and Blu-ray … and who knows, in time Henson’s off-the-wall comedy could achieve cult status.

For the record, that Dec. 4 street date for DVD and Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack editions of The Happytime Murders yields an ARR of 102 days.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyBonus features include commentary from Brian Henson (Muppet Treasure Island, The Muppet Christmas Carol) and voice actor Bill Barretta (voices for Detective Phil Philips, Junkyard and Boar), deleted scenes, a gag reel and a trio of featurettes — “Virtual Environments,” “Avatars Demo” and “VFX Breakdown.”

Also heading home on Dec. 4 from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment is director Chris Weitz’s Operation Finale.

The story of the capture of Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann (played by Ben Kingsley) by Israeli agents pulled in $17.5 million during its domestic theatrical run.   The ARR is 95 days.

Planned for release are DVD and Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack editions.
Bonus goodies include commentary from director Chris Weitz (The Twilight Saga: New Moon, The Golden Compass, About a Boy) and featurette titled “Inside the Operation.”

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment Adds Director Marc Forster's Christopher Robin To The Nov. 6 Home Entertainment Release Calendar

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
This comes as a total surprise.   With Walt Disney Home Entertainment’s mega hit, The Incredibles 2, already in place on Nov. 6, we fully anticipated that director Marc Forster delightful Christopher Robin would be targeted for release during early December.

Instead, this live-action/CGI story of the grown man, Christopher Robin (Ewan McGregor) from the “Hundred Acre Wood” and his childhood friends — Winnie the Pooh (voiced by Jim Cummings), et al — will also be heading home on Nov. 6 as DVD and Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack product offerings.

The ARR works out to 95 days and box office receipts were an impressive $98.1 million.
Disney did a very rare thing with the home entertainment announcement of Christopher Robin and turned to an outside PR agency to get the word out (Think Jam), which leads us to suspect that sign-offs (or other internal issues) came very late (we are likely inside the pre-book date) and an extra push was felt necessary for this very special film.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyThere’s nothing else in the theatrical pipeline for this year, so any December promotions will likely be from the studio’s film library.    Just can’t imagine Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment not having a Christmas-season promotion of some sort … perhaps additional 4K Ultra HD product offerings.

As to bonus features, which are limited to the Blu-ray SKU, include a quartet of featurettes — “A Movie Is Made for Pooh,” “Pooh Finds His Voice,” “Pooh and Walt Become Friends” and “Pooh and Friends Come to Life.”
